This black & white educational film “Yesterday’s Newsreel” was released by the Ziv Corporation in the 1950s. It was an early television show, which used the holdings of the General Newsreel Corp. as its source material.

Opening titles: Yesterday’s Newsreel. Title: Death Ride the Long Island Railroad, 1928 & 1950 (:07-:44). March 1928, Long Island City, NY, a rail accident, a train is off the tracks, people mill about. Three cars are off on their sides. 20 people are maimed. A crane helps assist the train upright. Thanksgiving Eve 1950, evening hour, another train wreck. People try and help others as they are near the derailed car. 79 people die. People use lights and try and look under the car and at the smashed cars. Lots of rescuers. A person is taken out of the wreckage by a stretcher. During daylight hours the next day, One of the smashed train cars is being looked at by investigators. A working train goes by (:45-2:26). Title: 1925 – Little Leaguers. November 29, 1925, Clark Griffith, owner of the Washington Senators baseball team, brings 7 boys and girls to Griffith Park to learn how to play baseball. All seven children are brothers and sisters. He put them on the field. The children play with a bat. The littlest boy swings and misses. A child and a woman run the bases. A child runs (2:27-3:37) Title: 1926 – Movies for Americans. October 8,1926. People stand around. Will Hayes and Secretary of Labor Davis. Hayes & Davis welcome the people to America. A woman smiles. A child sits and listens. A large crowd (3:38-4:22). Title: 1925 – Personalities. September 19, 1925. Robert La Follette Jr., son of Robert Marion La Follette, a famed Wisconsin Statesman. La Follette is talking with a man. He is following in his father’s footsteps of politics. Bad and worse – the entertaining Duncan Sisters. They kid around with one another. They are aboard the ship, the Olympic heading to Europe. Peter Bernhard Kyne, a novelist in New York, walks around with his wife. Kyne sits on a bench in the woods tapping his cane (4:23-5:34). Title: 1930 – Surprise Blizzard in Chicago. March 26, 1930, a blizzard hits Chicago. Snow falls, people and cars move slowly. An electric bus. Blowing snow. People shovel the street. A man shovels his own car out. Strong blowing wind/snow hits people as thy walk and turn away from the snow. People move quickly, snow is really falling. Chicago gets almost 20 inches of spring snow. A train sits on the tracks as people shovel nearby (5:35-6:29). Title: 1929 – Current Event. December 10, 1929. Harry C. White plays with a light bulb. He plays with half a million volts. He is a human connecting rod. He makes fire in another can when he touches electricity with his other hand (6:30-7:25). Title: 1925 – Indians Appeal to Save Land. October 27, 1925, San Francisco, CA. Troubled chiefs of Harris Pueblo Indians. The Mayor shakes their hands. Chiefs stand. Buffalo graze. Indians do a ceremonial dance (7:26-8:18). Title: 1928 – Aviation. Carl Eielson and George Wilkins are bundled up in jackets. They prepare to fly across the North Pole. Plane flies in the air. Men stand near a plane, one man cranks the propeller. Two men look down at ski runners for the plane. Eielson and Wilkins stand near each other and the plane (8:19-9:14). Title: 1928 – Fashions of the Day. A woman fishes in a pond and pulls out a fish, other woman congratulate her. Women in fish fashions on a rooftop. Portland, Oregon roof where women fish (9:15-10:32). Title: 1926 – Sports. January 9, 1926, Tampa, FL. A bull fight in the USA. A matador waves at the bull. Standing room only. Chicago. A huge cross country run with obstacles. Men jump over a pole. Runners thin out near the end of the race. One man wins (10:33-12:17). No end credits.
