62084 1950s AIR FRANCE TRAVELOGUE MOVIE FLIGHT TO IMMORTAL ROME ITALY

This late 1940s-early 1950s color travelogue film about Rome is sponsored by Air France and produced by Andre de la Varre. It opens with various shots of the Tiber River. The Ponte Sant Angelo bridge leads to the Castel Sant’Angelo. The Statue of Archangel Michael sheathing his sword is shown (:28-1:28). The Coliseum is shown from the top down to see the lion cages (1:35-2:29). Shown are the Arch of Constantine (2:40-2:55), the Arch of Titus (2:56-3:12), and the Arch of Septimius Severus (3:14), through which the Roman Forum is seen (3:15). The Forum ruins are panned (3:16-4:43). Trajan’s Forum has a highly carved marble column, shown up-close, and topped with a bronze St. Peter statue (4:45-5:17). The city is panned (5:18-5:37). An Air France Constellation lands. The passengers disembark and luggage moved in a truck (5:38-6:47). The plane receives fuel from a vintage ESSO truck (6:48-6:57). The statue of Victor Emmanuel overlooks the Piazza Venezia (7:25-7:40). 1930s and 1940s vehicles pass a white-gloved traffic policeman (7:40-8:27). Women walk down a narrow sidewalk (8:28-8:36). The Trevi Fountain is shown off (8:58-9:08). Monuments include The Column of Marcus Aurelius (9:09) and the Egyptian obelisk (9:24-9:35). The clock tower rises at Capitoline Hill. Statues include Castor and Pollux, Marcus Aurelius, and Romulus and Remus (9:36-10:10). A monument to Victor Emmanuel is surrounded by bronze and gold statues (10:11-10:25). Carved figures surround the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, guarded by soldiers in 1940s uniforms (10:27-10:42). The Pantheon Basilica is dedicated to St. Mary and Martyrs, with its single round window (11:08-11:30). The Church of St. Peter can be seen framed through leaves. The camera shows the view through the keyhole of the iron door on Aventine Hill in which the dome at St. Peter’s is perfectly centered (11:34-11:52). The square is full of people, a group of nuns, and the church bell rings (11:53-12:30). A processional is shown (12:31-13:20). Girls are dressed in white for First Confirmation and a group of girls also in all white for First Communion (13:21-13:44). St. John Lateran Basilica is shown, including the Holy Door (13:48-14:25) The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore is shown (14:26-14:42). A statue stands at the Papal Basilica of St. Paul outside the Walls; shown is its Holy Door (14:43-15:52). Vatican City, panned from above, shows the twisting roofs of the Vatican Palace (15:54-16:52). Two colorfully-dressed Swiss Guards stand watch (16:53-17:20). The Pope has beautiful gardens to enjoy. The dome of St. Peter’s is framed through a floral arch (17:21-18:15). A view from the dome looks down over Rome and the Square of St. Peter. The camera pans across Its colonnade (18:16-19:16). The Egyptian obelisk stands in the former arena (19:17-19:35). More views of the dome and fountains at St. Peters close the film (19:36-20:35).
