62024 AIR FRANCE 1960s SAINT MORITZ SWITZERLAND SKI TRIP TRAVELOGUE MOVIE

This 1960s color film about Saint Moritz Switzerland and the French Alps is one of a series of Air France “Flying Holidays” travelogues directed by Paul Mattei and a Les Analyses Cinematographiques production. It opens with the Sud Aviation Caravelle pilot’s view of the runway at the St. Moritz airport (1:18-1:45). The Suvrettahaus Hotel has a skating rink. A female skater receives training from a coach in 1960s gray pants, white sweater, gloves, and hat (2:38-3:12). Curling and a curling stone are shown up-close (3:14-3:33). Beginners take skiing lessons (3:35-4:04). A bobsledding team rounds a curve. Bobsled maintenance is performed. A camera on a two-man team’s sled records the trip. The sled stops by a “Danger! Look out for Bobs Achtung!” sign (4:06-5:05). Gloves are shown and the bell rings at Cresta Run toboggan track. He races down on his stomach on the sled (5:06-5:25). An equestrian jumping event takes place on a snow-covered course. Riders jump the different fences (5:27-6:27). A woman lights another woman’s cigarette across the table. A woman fills her wine glass from the aerating wine dispenser (6:28-6:43). A man and woman wear traditional Swiss outfits. They get into a sleigh pulled by a costumed horse and pass the Leaning Clock Tower. The couple exits Chesa Veglia. The man whispers in her ear, making her laugh. (6:50-7:30). The pilot’s landing view is shown at Lake Geneva. Passengers disembark and luggage unloaded (7:33-8:00). People board a Auderset-Dubois Geneve bus; the driver loads skis (8:01-8:09). The French Alps Mer de Glace (Sea of Ice) glacier is on Mont Blanc. Skiers sit with their skis planted upwards; others enjoy terrace views (8:10-8:50). The camera pans the snow-covered tops of the Alps (8:52-9:15). A close-up of a sweater patch is shown at the Ski Instructors Festival. Instructors in matching red sweaters ski gracefully (9:16-9:53). A folklore dance is performed (9:54-10:15). At night, instructors use colored torch lights to perform on the slope (10:17-10:42). The Aiguille du Midi (Needle of the South) is accessed via cable car, from which views of the peaks are shown (10:50-11:58). A club bar has energetic singing, dancing, smoking, drinking, and eating by people in 1960s clothing and hairstyles. Others enjoy a quiet club with an Air France poster (12:02-14:17). A group of children and adults carry their skis and try skiing (14:24-14:42). Val d’isere Dam, cable cars, and various town buildings are shown (15:12-15:50). A Gyrafrance helicopter lands. Skiers board and the mountain tops shown (15:57-17:10). A ski instructor patch is shown, followed by students exercising on skis (17:11-17:32). A downhill ski race is shown (17:34-17:50). A woman skier in a white sweater puts on cat-eye wing-tip sunglasses (18:20). A child pulls a sled. Children ski (18:22). A surface lift and standing ski lift are shown (18:37-19:00). A sweater patch for Courchevel is shown and people line up on skis. The camera captures them skiing by (19:01-19:42). Advanced skiing is shown and the camera is placed so that the skiers ski over it (19:43-21:36).
