61974 PAN AM AIRLINES 1971 FLIGHT TO AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND & FIJI TRAVELOGUE

This 1971 color film about the South Pacific islands of Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and American Samoa is one of a series of Pan Am Airlines travelogues. It is produced by Film Services Limited. It opens with a montage of flying over a dry region. A close-up of a lizard head and flicking tongue are followed by other lizards (:08-1:13). A native man startles a kookaburra and passes two kangaroos and an emu (1:14-1:45). Cowboys pause for a meal before herding cattle through the brush (1:46-3:14). An Ansett Airlines plane lands at Alice Springs, Australia, and the passengers disembark (3:15-3:35). A horse race is watched by bystanders (3:36-4:08). A montage of surfers, sunbathers, and members of the Australian Beach Lifeguard Challenge in action are shown (4:09-4:40). A catamaran and other types of boats are quickly shown (4:41-4:51). The Sydney Harbor Bridge is seen in the distance (4:52). A montage of the tops halves of skyscrapers is shown (4:55-5:00). People in 1970s clothing walk past (5:01-5:08). Interesting metal architecture is shown on buildings, houses, and fences (5:10-5:48). A traffic policeman wears khaki knee socks, shorts, and shirt. The footage is quickly interspersed with pedestrians, boaters, motorcycle policeman, a family riding motorbikes, and short dresses (5:49-6:35). A woman with a flower in her hair naps in a hammock on a sailboat. A guy in a Speedo unfurls the sails before sitting cross-legged by the woman (6:36-7:04). A woman and man perform an intimate Polynesian style dance together that resembles the Hula (7:26-8:34). Two fishermen walk around their large net floating off-shore (8:35-8:40). Views of Pan Am Jet Clipper 811 are shown in the air and in the cockpit. Several instrument panels and the pilot’s interaction with the tower are shown before the plane lands in Fiji (8:45-9:52). A barefoot band in red military jackets and knee-length white fringed skirts drill (9:54-10:50). A foot kicks a rugby ball (10:51-11:25). A birds-eye view of the coastline around perfect blue Pacific islands of rock outcrops is shown (11:26-11:57). A variety of views of the ocean, boats, and palm trees are shown in American Samoa. Males scoot up palm trees and use a machete to cut down coconuts (12:00-12:54). A game similar to baseball and cricket is played (12:55-13:12). Maori men, indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand, wear floral head wreaths as they get in and paddle long canoes (13:40-14:30). Maori rely on fishing. Baskets are pulled in with fish in them (14:31-14:55). A distant view of New Zealand’s snowy mountains and volcanoes is shown (14:55-15:20). A large herd of white sheep is shown up-close and running from the camera. A man and boys drive them into a pen; a boy rides a sheep (15:21-16:00). Guys and gals hike past a flowing stream and a long waterfall (16:01-16:40). Flying views of the South Pacific include snow-covered mountains winding rivers, peaks, waterfalls, islands, canoes, cowboys, waves, fishermen, and sunsets (16:41-19:50).
