61954 AIR FRANCE 1960s TRAVELOGUE MOVIE FLYING HOLIDAY TO INDIA NEW DELHI BENGAL JAIPUR

This 1960s color film about India is one of a series of Air France “Flying Holidays” travelogues directed by Jack Sanger. It opens with a Sud Aviation Caravelle in flight and a view in the cockpit (1:00-1:13). In Calcutta, a traffic officer directs cars as a trolley and double-decker bus pass (1:15-1:32). Chowringhee Street has (Queen) Victoria Memorial Hall (1:33). The Bay of Bengal serves large ships and small boats (1:51-2:03). The Howrah Bridge spans the Hooghly River (2:07-2:14). Men carry baskets of river mud to be used by artisans making religious statues. A man rubs the clay over a straw female figure shaped with strips of canvas. The rough molds of women’s bodies dry in the sun. Finished statues are shown. (2:15-3:32). The Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya honors Buddah (3:33-3:50). The Dhamekh Stupa, with its intricate carvings still intact in places, is in Sarnath (3:51-4:15). Monkeys live at the Durga Temple in Benares (Varanasi) (4:16-4:40). People walk past houses painted with images (4:42-5:50). A man carries a large basket of produce on his head and a woman holds a tray full of vegetables (5:05-5:14). A man gets a shave and women string flower garlands as people pass by (5:15-5:45). Ghats lead down to the Ganges River where male and female pilgrims purify themselves by bathing in its waters before attending temple ceremonies. The camera pans the shore from a boat, and different ghats and bathers are shown (5:48-7:38). An elderly Indian man with shaggy hair and beard has his body covered in white chalk (7:48). An elderly man wearing a long necklace and white pants stands praying, arms upraised (8:04). More ritual bathers (8:08-8:25). A cow walks through the straight wearing a flower lei (8:26). An artisan engraves copper vases and trays (8:44-8:58). A potter makes clay vases, a long number drying in the sun are shown (9:59-9:12). Finished, they are used to dip water as a team of zebus turns the wheel (9:13-9:36). A station wagon stops for the night at a dak bungalow (9:45-9:55). Women wear beautiful saris and silver bracelets and necklaces to the market. Ankle rings are sold (10:00-10:31). A wood Ferris wheel entertains children (10:33-10:42). The temples in Khajuraho are shown, covered in Hindu carvings. Many different carved statues are shown (10:43-12:20). Women wearing ankle bracelets come to the temple and lay their saris in the sun to dry (12:22-12:40). Gwalior has the Man Mandir Palace (12:45-13:30). A drummer whirls and a costumed dance with swords and shields is performed (13:32-14:50). Multiple views of the Taj Mahal at Agra are shown (14:55-15:48). Snake charmers use a pungi with coiled cobras (15:50-16:08). Jaipur has the Hawa Mahal out of pink sandstone (16:25-16:42). A elderly artisan creates jewelry and a peacock broach is shown (16:43-17:02). An elephant wearing a blanket and hat walks past the City Palace of the Maharajah (17:15-17:26). Republic Day is celebrated in New Delhi with a parade of soldiers, bands, decorated camels and elephants, and dancers, including different tribal dances (17:45-19:40).
