61944 1960s EDUCATIONAL FILM — LIFE ALONG THE AMAZON RIVER BRAZIL

This 16mm color documentary, The Amazon…Life Along the River in Brazil, is an educational film that documents the typical life of those who live along the river. It was produced by Academy Films in 1962 as an instructional film.The documentary starts out showing a boat on the Amazon River, often called the River Sea (0:22-0:57). A map of the Amazon is shown with tributaries into the river from the countries of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil. Main cities on the river are Iquitos, Peru; Manaus, Brazil; and Belem, Brazil at the mouth of the river (0:58-1:1:18). Seaplanes provide taxi service on the river (1:19-1:31). The plane stops in Leticia, Columbia (1:31-1:52). Views of the river are shown from the plane and you can see the clear Negro or Black River joining the muddy Amazon River (2:05-2:20), then a boat ride gives you a closer look (2:21-2:54). Manaus, a city on the Negro River, is hemmed in by the jungle and the river (2:55-3:04). Manaus, capital city of the state of Amazonas, is shown (3:05-3:22), along with views of the city (3:23-3:56). Amazon peoples have pets such as Macaws (3:57-4:10), Parrots (4:11-4:15), and Monkeys, including the Spider Monkey (4:16-4:32). Views of an 1896 Opera House are shown called the Amazon Theatre, home of the Amazonas Philharmonic Orchestra (4:33-4:50). A rubber tree is cut for Latex which is turned into rubber balls for shipment (4:51-5:40). Views of the market (5:41-5:54). Manaus has a Floating city with houses built on rafts and floating sidewalks (5:55-6:14). Brazil’s people groups are mainly a mixture of Portuguese, indigenous Indian and African (6:16-6:51). Trading takes place in the Floating city then boats take wares down river in what is called an Amazon Train (6:52-7:45). Along the river, boats are homes for the people. Women cook in the stern and food is mostly fish and Cassava, a flour made from Manioc root (7:46-8:06). Mission boats and Missionaries, along with boat from the Brazilian Government, bring health care along the river (8:08-9:03). The economy is rooted in trade, so Floating Docks are used, then Overhead tramway’s carry goods to docks on shore (9:34-10:39). Views of the shore and boats loading Jute and Alligator hides are shown (10:40-11:53). Cattle are raised for food (11:54-12:13). Fish and shrimp are abundant (12:15-12:25). A Capybara (12:33-12:41), a Tapir (12:42-12:54) and a Sloth (12:55-13:07) are shown. The principle trade post of the Amazon is Belem. A map of the mouth of the river is shown (13:08-13:24). Aerial views of Belem with the docks (13:25-13:40). Scenes of people loading and unloading small Trading Boats of goods. Oranges and pineapples can be seen (13:43-15:32). A map of the Amazon Delta is shown (15:33-15:50) which has many islands at the Amazon opening, the largest being the Island of Marajo. Scenes are then shown of the Amazon emptying into the ocean after 4,345 miles of travel (15:51-16:26).
