Actual footage of Italy attacking Ethiopia in tanks is shown. General Graziani watches as his troops penetrate the valley. Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie watches his men fight. Italian guns rake the road to Addis Ababa while an Italian Pipistrello bombs from above. Ethiopian defenders ride horseback, rifles held high. A crowd greets Benito Mussolini at the Piazza May 5, 1936, shown making gestures from a window above. New York Worlds Fair Opens 1939 (3:24-4:20). Men put final touches on the 40’ model of New York City. Mayor LaGuardia officially opens the Fair, receiving the first ticket. Georges Clemenceau Dies 1929 (4:23-5:26) Prime Minister Clemenceau is shown reviewing French troops and walking through town ruins destroyed by war. He also visits the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., and is shown at its base. Personalities (5:36-7:10) Live footage is shown of Fahreda Spyropoulos, known as Fatima, belly dances at the Street in Cairo” exhibition at the 1893 Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition. Charles Evans Hughes retires as Secretary of State in 1925 and is succeeded by Frank B. Kellogg (6:10). Ralph Pulitzer gives the government a submarine chaser (6:37). 1929, the SS Ile de France ocean liner arrives in New York carrying actor Maurice Chevalier (6:53). Fashions of the Day 1936 (7:11-8:24). In Florida, women get their hair styled in updos and curls. Performing on stage is aquatic performer, actress, and bathing suit designer Annette Kellerman and her dancers wearing seaweed costumes. Following that is a one-piece 1936 bathing suit fashion show. Aviation 1933 (8:26-9:55). July 23, 1933, the flying team of Amy and Jim Mollison ran out of fuel in an attempt to break a non-stop flight record from Wales to New York. Shown are the crash wreckage, each being helped from the plane from medics, and them telling what happened. Sports 1932 (9:56-12:13) [Four 1932 Summer Olympic winners are shown in other events prior to the Games] National Champion Georgia Coleman dives in Central Park, New York. [She would gold in the 3-meter springboard and silver in the 10-meter platform.] Helene Madison breaks the world’s record in the 500-meter freestyle. [She would win gold in the 100- and 400-meter freestyle and the 4 x 100-meter freestyle.] Stella Walsh wins the 220-yard race in Jersey City, New Jersey. [She would take gold in the 100 meter.] Mildred Babe Didrikson wins the 80-meter hurdle at the AAU Championships. [ She would take gold in the 80-meter hurdles, gold in the javelin throw, and silver in the high jump.]
