61654 1965 PAN AM TRAVELOGUE ARGENTINA “NEW HORIZONS” BUENOS AIRES

This 1965 color film on Argentina is one of a series of Pan Am New Horizons travelogues. It is a F.D. and I.L. Kay and Film Authors Production and narrated by Duncan Pirnie. A Pan American Jetliner lands and passengers disembark (:50-1:02). The film opens with a bird’s eye view of Buenos Aires (1:04-1:27). A square is full of pigeons (1:28) outside the subway station (1:32). A traffic cop blows his whistle and directs traffic (1:34). Busses and cars drive past (1:35-2:00). A man on a Vespa scooter pulls a cart full of children (2:02-2:08). A man sleeps on stacks of objects in the back of an open truck (2:12). People eat at outdoor cafes (2:14-2:20). A street vendor pours a cup of coffee to a passenger in a car (2:23-2:31). Inside a coffee bar, a line of coffee cups are filled (2:32-2:38). Shown are The Congress Building (2:39-2:49), the horseback statue of Jose de San Martin (2:50), the Casa Rosada pink house (2:57-3:08) and the changing of the guard (3:09-3:27). The Avenida Santa Fe street is full of well-dressed shoppers (3:28-3:38). A woman in a blue shift dress wears pearls, red gloves, and sunglasses (3:39). For sale are patent leather purses (3:42-3:58). Another store features items symbolic of gauchos (3:59-4:17). A woman tries on a vicuna wool scarf (4:19). Cattle are barbequed over a large burning open pit (4:30). A man pours a glass of wine from a large bottle in a basket (4:35). A construction crew cooks steaks over a plywood fire (4:44-5:08). An elderly gardener uses a hose to water flowers (5:32-5:40) in the city parks where people row boats amongst swans (5:41-5:47). A couple have a romantic conversation on a park bench (5:48) and birds fly in front of a small child (5:50). A view of the outside of a multi-tier apartment building zooms in on a couple dressed in bathing suits (5:57-6:00). Polo is a popular sport (6:01-6:30), as is juego del pato, also known as duck (6:31-7:09). Neon signs light up the evening (7:11- 7:19). A large metal bell is rung as chefs prepare to serve steaks (7:20). Elegantly dressed people arrive at the Teatro Colon opera house (7:32-8:03). Restaurants and night clubs offer dancing (8:04). La Boca offers informal dining and dancing (8:18-8:52). Mar de Plata is shown from above (8:54-9:00). Waves crash on a rocky beach full of sunbathers in 1960s swimsuits (9:03-9:30). The government-owned casino is also at the beach (9:32). Inside, popular games include roulette and craps tables (9:32- 9:57). San Carlos de Bariloche is another favorite wilderness area to visit (10:05-10:38) with its different flowers and yae yae trees (10:39-11:00). The native arrayanes trees strangely twist together in the forest (11:03-11:44). The sights and sounds of the Falls of Iguazu are magnificent, with tiny yellow butterflies everywhere (11:45-13:00).
