61404 PAN AM AIRLINES 1960s TRAVEL TO AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND PROMOTIONAL FILM

This 1960 color film about Australia and New Zealand is one of a series of Pan Am “New Horizons” travelogues. It is narrated by Ed Stokes and produced by F.D. Kay. It begins with a colorful ‘focus leader’ for the film operator (:00-:50). A bird’s eye view is given of the Great Barrier Reef (:51-2:23). Sydney is the largest and oldest city. The Harbour Bridge is a large single-span bridge (2:24-2:42). Heavy traffic and many pedestrians in late 1950s clothing are shown (2:43-3:20). Canberra has the Federal House of Parliament, high-rise apartment buildings, and the copper-domed Academy of Science (3:21-3:52). A marching band and beauty queens on floats please the crowd as part of the annual Festival of Moomba in Melbourne (3:53-4:20). Waves crash on a beach of bikini sunbathers and multiple surfers on surfboards take on the waves (4:30-5:49). The voluntary surf lifesaving clubs march by and compete in rescue scenarios in teams of row boats hit and overtaken by large waves (5:50-7:30). The colorful masts of sailboats glide through the water (7:31-7:56). A very large flock of bleating sheep are shown on a ranch, with a sheep dog providing guidance (6:58-8:40). Albino kangaroos hop by and a koala perches in a tree (8:45-9:00). Aboriginal Australian children and adults are shown, including painting their faces and bodies with white clay and performing a dance (9:01-9:53). Totems of the Maori are shown in New Zealand, and a group of girls performs a poi dance using small fiber balls (9:54-10:29). New Zealand has tranquil lakes, where the fish are clearly seen. Trout and quinnat salmon fisherman cast their lines and catch fish (10:30-11:52). The Southern Alps are covered in snow caps (11:54-12:28). A Cessna plane with skis lands on the snow at Mount Cook (12:29-12:53). Milford Sound has tourists on the deck of a hotel looking at the surrounding mountains (12:54-13:52).
