Police in New York City fight with protestors (01:50). There are shots of U.S. Navy ships and men training for the Navy. Roosevelt rides in a parade in 1901 (02:30). Roosevelt is escorted to his inaugural ceremony by members of the Rough Riders. The President observes a bird reserve established under his administration. The film shows footage of a ship moving through the Panama Canal (03:33). Roosevelt speaks in Springfield, IL. The next segment shows Harry Houdini performing a daring escape from a chained straight jacket as he is hoisted up a building, upside down, in 1926. In the next segment, “1931: Personalities,” viewers see the famed evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson standing with her third husband Mr. Hutton, standing at the pulpit, and speaking on a passenger ship after returning from Europe. The segment also features actress Theda Bara (06:14) and musician Harry Lauder being greeted by Sir Thomas Lipton while on his farewell tour. Viewers are then taken to Dayton, TN, for the 1925 John Scopes trial, also known as the “Darwin Case.” Scopes stands with his lawyer Clarence Darrow. Footage shows the courtroom, Darrow speaking to the crowd, and William Jennings Bryan presenting the prosecution’s case. In 1928’s “Fashions of the Day,” viewers get a glimpse of a New York fashion show that features a mink wraparound, a tiger fur coat, an ermine-trimmed coat, and a different assortment of hats. The film then shows scenes from the 1936 Johnstown, PA flood. Aerial footage shows flooded residential areas, and the Conemaugh River as it rushes through the town (09:06). People flee from the rumored bursting of the nearby dam. In “Aviation,” Ruth Elder stands before her plane American Girl with George Halderman. Her plane prepares to take off. She is greeted in France by a cheering crowd. She stands with husband Lyle Womack on a ship as they arrive back in the U.S. She signs on for a vaudeville tour with E.A. Schiller.
