60864 1947 VERMONT BURLINGTON, BENNINGTON TRAVELOGUE MOVIE “THIS LAND OF OURS”

The 1947 episode “The State of Vermont,” part of the Carl Dudley Productions motion pictures series This Land Of Ours, gives viewers a taste of Vermont. Vermont, the first state to be added to the original 13, is home to breathtaking scenery. The state’s large waterways provide energy through hydroelectric power (01:17) and opportunities for recreation: Lake Champlain is the largest lake east of the Great Lakes. Vermont’s first settlement is Brattleboro (01:30), situated on the Connecticut River. Rutland (01:54) is known as the Marble City due to its nearby quarries that produce more than 70% of marble used in the U.S. Barre (02:35) is home to granite quarries. Montpelier (03:07) is Vermont’s capital, with its beautiful capital building (08:45), and was established in 1805. The state’s largest city is Burlington (03:22), home of Ethan Allen and the state’s flagship university (03:43). Bennington (04:02) was the first town to be chartered west of the Connecticut River and is known for the Battle of Bennington. The Revolutionary War battle is commemorated by one of the tallest battle monuments in the world (04:20). Bennington also features first-rate institutions of learning, such as the Bennington School for Girls. Vermont claims Calvin Coolidge as one of its sons; Coolidge was born in small store in Plymouth (04:47). Rural landscapes (05:00) dominate much of Vermont, and feature poultry, potato, and cattle farms. Vermont’s cattle are responsible for the state’s famous milk, cream, butter, and cheese industry, with products transported by companies like White Bros. Milk Co. (06:08). Vermont’s most famous resource is arguably the sap harvested from maple trees (06:18), which is turned into maple syrup, sugar, and candy (06:43). With scenic beauty everywhere, from covered bridges to picturesque inns, from pristine rivers to snow-covered slopes (07:30), there is something for everyone during every season.
