60834 1947 STATE OF MASSACHUSETTS TRAVELOGUE FILM “THIS LAND OF OURS”

The 1947 episode “Massachusetts,” part of the Carl Dudley Productions motion pictures series This Land Of Ours, gives viewers an overview of one of the original colonies and widely considered “the cradle of the Republic.” Massachusetts is steeped in American colonial history, home to historic sites such as Lexington (01:00), Bunker Hill (01:15), Boston’s old State House (01:40), and the Old North Church (01:49). Faneuil Hall (02:02) has hosted many famous orators who proudly proclaimed American ideals. Boston is not only a city full of historic buildings; it is also a busy industrial and commercial city with a massive port. Cape Ann (02:40) and Gloucester are popular coastal locations in Massachusetts; (02:53) Our Lady of Good Voyage (02:53) and the bronze statue of the Gloucester fisherman are typical highlights for any visitor. At the tip of Cape Cod (03:20) is Provincetown, known for its art colony. Nearby is Plymouth Rock (03:49). Massachusetts is known for its high-quality schools: Smith College (04:18) at Northampton is a famous college for women; Amherst (04:32) is the well-known small school for men; Williams College (04:40), MIT (04:53), and Harvard (05:03) are highly respected institutions throughout the world. Agriculture is a major part of Massachusetts’ culture. Specialized farming like shade-grown tobacco (05:29), turkeys, and cranberries are found throughout the state. Massachusetts is primarily a manufacturing state (06:14), producing goods such as paper, boots, and shoes. Lowell is a famous textile city and one of America’s first, but other cities like Fall River and Worcester are also known for textile manufacturing. Worcester (06:46) is Massachusetts’ second largest city and is also famous for its steel wire and cable production. Massachusetts is also famous for tourist attractions that include the Wayside Inn (07:14), the Little Red School House from “Mary Had A Little Lamb,” and the home in Quincy that housed two of America’s presidents. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy all the state has to offer, from hiking the rolling Berkshires or skiing the snowy slopes to sailing along the coast. Massachusetts, with its rich history, land, and people is a great state to visit for anyone, anytime.
