This black and white, silent film, “Golden Gate City, San Francisco”, dates to about 1937 or 38. Castle Films was a home movie distributor founded in California in 1924 by Eugene W. Castle. This film was one of Castle Film’s series called The World Parade. The film highlights the things to see in and around San Francisco Bay.

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the one-mile-wide strait connecting San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. At the time of its opening in 1937, it was the longest and tallest suspension bridge in the world (0:34-0:46). View from on top of a suspension tower (0:46-0:49). Purcell (1:51-2:03) Electric streetcar (2:04-2:05). Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay is an Artificial Island built in 1936-37 (2:16-2:27). San Francisco Ferry Building, building was complete in 1898 (2:32-2:39). Twin Peaks, two prominent hills near the center of San Francisco (2:55-3:05). The Electric streetcars on Market Street, which starts at the Ferry Building and extends to Twin Peaks (3:07-3:21). Outdoor flower stands (3:27-3:40). Third & Market, Times Square of the West (3:46-4:05). Union Square is a public Plaza downtown San Francisco (4:10-4:43). Cable cars turn in the streets (4:34-4:51). City Hall in San Francisco completed in 1915 (5:28-5:53). San Francisco Mint, a branch of the U.S. Mint, opened in 1937 (5:58-6:07). Gold bullion being transferred to the Mint and made into coins (6:08-6:42). Chinatown (6:50-7:56). Sun Yat-sen Statue in San Francisco’s Chinatown (7:01-7:08). Chinese dragon dancer (7:21-7:56). Reading Chinese (8:22-8:32). Chinese fashions (8:38-8:55). Fishermen’s Wharf is on the Northern Waterfront. A fisherman mending his nets (9:03-9:34). 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition / World’s Fair, Palace of the Fine Arts (9:42-9:58). Mission Dolores or Mission San Francisco de Asis built in 1776 (10:04-10:23). Golden Gate Park is San Francisco’s city park. It was created in 1871. (10:31-12:29). Conservatory of Flowers opened 1879 (11:30-11:38). Buffalo grazing (11:39-11:49). Spreckels Temple of Music (12:24-12:28). The Cliff House, overlooking the ocean, was first built in 1858. Seal Rocks is a group of rock formation islands, off shore from the Cliff House, where Steller’s sea lions and California sea lions hang out (12:35-12:49).
