Early submarines are shown (1:16-1:28), as is Grand Admiral Alfred von Tirpitz of Nazi Germany (1:29-1:39). Actual footage of an English ship is shown being shelled and completely sunk by a U-boat (1:40-2:18). The U-boat spots another steamer and sends a surface torpedo. The British ship’s crew are seen in lifeboats and taken aboard as prisoners of war (2:19-3:00). A prototype steam-propelled sub has collapsible funnels (3:01-3:25). A sub comes into dock (3:26-3:55). Rin Tin Tin (3:58). Rin Tin Tin entertains sick children in the late 1920s (4:03-4:35). Litvinoff Visits U.S. 1933 (4:37). President Roosevelt (4:48) invites a Russian representative to the United States. Russia sends M. M. Litvinoff, who arrives to fanfare (5:04-5:50). Personalities (5:50). Theatrical producer David Belasco buys WWI bonds in 1918 (5:58-6:13), Gloria Swanson is shown with her new husband, the Marquis de la Falaise, in 1925 (6:14-6:37), and cartoonist Clare Briggs draws for the camera (6:38-7:00). Miniature Golf 1928-1930 (7:02). Men and women play the new popular pasttime miniature golf (7:09-7:21). Courses were even on building rooftops (7:22-7:53). 1932 Chicago Granary Fire (7:53). The fire rages on August 4, 1932 as firefighters and fireboats attempt to get it under control (7:57-9:16). Piccard’s Balloon October 1934 (9:17). Jeannette and Auguste Piccard are shown in Dearborn, Michigan attempting to set an altitude record in their balloon Stratosphere (9:25-9:55). 1928 Fashions of the Day (10:00). Shown are knee-length winter coats made of ermine (stoat) trimmed in white fox with a silk brocade lining, as well as ermine and sable, and ermine and monkey fur (10:06-10:58). 1922 Sports (11:00). The first women’s international track and field meet is held in Paris. Our female athletes smile for the camera (11:07-11:24). Shown are the 100 (11:26), the high jump (11:31), shot put (11:42), broad jump (11:45), and javelin throw (12:04).
