60714 YESTERDAY’S NEWSREEL GEN. ENGELBERT DOLLFUSS ASSASSINATED 1939 GOLDEN GATE EXPOSITION

This black and white film is one of the episodes of “Yesterday’s Newsreels”, an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features ten segments of historic highlights. Dollfuss Shot! (:29). Engelbert Dollfuss, the dictator of Austria, waves to a crowd on May 1, 1934 and signs a pact with Mussolini (:30-1:04). Dollfuss was assassinated July 25, 1934 by Austrian Nazis. His death mask is shown (1:05), followed by thousands mourning him in Vienna (1:06-1:18). His successor, Kurt Schuschnigg, shakes hands (1:19-1:30). Soldiers sit with machine guns as the Home Guard (Heimwehr) is ordered out by Prince Von Starhemberg (1:31-1:35). Soldiers are handed guns from the back of a truck (1:36-1:45). Minister of Defense Major Fey (1:50) puts Vienna under martial law, with trucks of soldiers to enforce it (1:51-1:59). Italian troops walk up the winding mountain paths (2:00-2:10). Soldiers in Vienna are outside the prison holding the assassins (2:11-2:35). U.S. Gains a Possession (2:47). Treasure Island, off San Francisco, was artificially built for the Golden Gate International Exposition held in 1939 and 1940 (2:49-3:00). The gates are unlocked on February 18, 1939 by California Governor Olson (3:01) and the crowds pour in (3:02-3:24). President Franklin D. Roosevelt makes a speech about the opening from Key West, Florida (3:25-4:04). Aga Khan and Aly Khan Wed (4:23). Sir Sultan Muhammed Shah (Aga Khan III) weds Andree Carron in Aix-les-Bains, France on December 7, 1929 (4:24-4:48). His son, Prince Ali Salman Aga Khan, famously married actress Rita Hayworth on May 27, 1949 (4:49-5:05). Present at the wedding dinner is Aga Khan (5:06-5:17). 1925 Personalities (5:19). British Shakespearean actress Ellen Terry talks with Sir James M. Barrie, author of Peter Pan, at her 1925 ceremony where she receives the title of Dame (5:20-5:38). She is shown at age 77, opening a home for blind children (5:39-5:48). The Roosevelts (5:50). In 1925, Theodore Roosevelt Jr. and his brother Kermit say farewell to their families before they head to Asia in search of rare animals (5:51-6:06). Marie Curie (6:07). Scientist Marie Curie, the discoverer of radium in 1898, looks through a book outside the Institut de Radium Pavillon Curie (6:08-6:17). Marie works in her laboratory (6:18-6:25). Nicaragua Rocked by Earthquake! (6:30). Buildings crumble and others burn during actual scenes of the 1931 earthquake in Nicaragua (6:38-6:51). Aerial shots show the destruction (6:52-7:08). Workers pick through rubble (7:09-7:34). U.S. Marines set up medical units (7:35-7:55). Aviation (7:58). The U.S. Army tests the viability of De Haviland-4 planes in a race October 8, 1919. Shown are take-off, flying, and landing video mostly of the winner Lieutenant BW Maynard (7:59-9:57). His wife and children stand near a Model T (9:29). 1923 Fashions (10:00). Features a brief fashion show of fur coats (10:01-10:35). 1927 Sports (10:40). This segment features the International Dog Race in Quebec (10:48-11:29). Olympian Ralph Metcalfe sprints to victory at Madison Square Garden (11:30-11:37). Also shown are the 65 meter high hurdles and the 1500 meter with Glenn Cunningham (11:38-12:19).
