60684 YESTERDAY’S NEWSREELS 1937 GM AUTO STRIKE R101 AIRSHIP CRASH PICCADILLY STREET LONDON

This black and white film is one of the episodes of “Yesterday’s Newsreels”, an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features eight segments of historic highlights. Striker’s Squat 1937 (:29). Strikers hang out of the windows of a GM auto factory in Flint, Michigan, where family members are allowed to visit. (:34-:50). The strikers refuse to leave against court orders (:59). Tensions rise and picketers join the cause (1:00-2:00). Hotel staff on strike dance and eat a turkey dinner (2:01-2:23). Hotel guest and famous explorer Osa Johnson is carried to a car by officers (2:24-2:31). Singer Ethel Shutta is turned away at the door (2:32-2:42). Sit-down strikes spread to packing plants but police force workers out and haul them away in Black Marias (police vans) (2:45-3:15). Detroit streets are full of picketers and Homer Martin, the strike leader, is shown (3:16-3:40). Walter Chrysler meets with Governor Murphy and the strike is over (3:42-4:16). Ex-Champs Turn Farmers 1924 (4:20). James J Jeffries feeds animals on his ranch in California (4:25-4:38). He lights a cigarette off of fellow heavyweight champion Jim Corbett and Jeffries shows off his farming skills (4:39-5:09). Horse-Drawn Bus Takes Last Ride 1916 (5:12). Piccadilly Street in London is full of different types and sizes of horse-drawn vehicles. The horse-drawn bus rides end in 1916 (5:17-5:42). Personalities (5:46). Oliver Wendell Holmes was the oldest member of the US Supreme Court in 1930 at the age of 89 (5:52-6:13), and is shown with Chief Justice Charles Hughes (6:01). Bea Lillie was a slapstick performer in 1928 (6:15-6:27). Roger Wolfe Kahn leads his orchestra in the early 1930s (6:28-6:52). Death Rides a Dirigible (6:55). The crew of the British R101 airship is shown, as is British Air Minister Lord Thompson before he dies when the dirigible crashes on October 5, 1930, killing 48 of 54 people onboard (7:04-7:14). The riders take the elevator up to the R101, before it is shown flying (7:15-7:40). The wreckage of twisted metal is shown from the following day, with wooden caskets in a horse-drawn wagon (7:42-8:10). 1920 Fashions (8:16). A shoe fashion show takes place in Brooklyn (8:22). A woman shoes off her brocade evening heeled slippers (8:23-8:40). Next is a pair of buckled walking shoes paired with heavy black stockings (8:41-8:50). Additional pairs are shown, including a pair of combination spat shoes (8:51-9:17). Aviation 1925-1949 (8:16). Berlin Tempelhof Airport was the world’s most lavish airport in 1925 (8:27-9:38). Passengers board a 1925 Lufthansa plane and it takes off (9:39-10:05). In 1949, the U.S. Air Force flies in food, clothing, and supplies to the starving Germans, which is unloaded onto trucks (10:06-10:30). Sports (10:42). Tennis player Vincent Richards arrives at Forest Hills, New York (10:50). His match is against Czech player Karel Kozeluh, whom he beats to win the 1928 United States Pro Championship (10:51-11:28). The 1934 Hambletonian Stakes is for harness racing trotters at Good Time Park in Goshen, NY (11:30-12:09).
