60464 YESTERDAY’S NEWSREEL PRESIDENT WOODROW WILSON ALBANIA’S KING ZOG FIRST SKYWRITING PLANE

This black and white film is one of the episodes of “Yesterday’s Newsreels”, an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features eight segments of historic highlights. Woodrow Wilson 1856-1924. 1914 President Wilson votes in the primaries. He leaves Princeton University and is shown waving from the back of the Presidential Train. Mrs. Wilson waves to crowds from a curtained window. 1917 President Wilson speaks to Congress. He is blindfolded to draw the first draft number. U.S. soldiers wave as they sail for France. War footage is briefly shown. President Wilson in a top hat walks down Pennsylvania Avenue. Wilson signs a baseball at Griffith Stadium. 1918 The cheering crowd waves hats and flags. Wilson attends the Peace Conference with General Pershing. Wilson is circled among the crowd in the Hall of Mirrors. 1919 President Wilson returns on the George Washington. A reporter types at a typewriter. Footage is shown of his campaign travels. 1924, an ill Wilson is shown, as is the house he dies in. President Coolidge attends the funeral (:40-4:59). 1929 Liners Dock at London. The gates of the London Locks are opened (5:00-5:40). 1924 Personalities. Author Albert Payson Terhune plays with his Collies (5:41-6:10). Broadway actress Maxine Elliott smiles for the camera wearing a 1920s hat with full face lace (6:11-6:30). Louisiana Senator Huey Long chops wood. He is shown speaking before his assassination in 1935 (6:31-6:58). 1934 Fire Ravages Hotel. A firefighter climbs up a ladder in Lansing, MI, fighting the blazing Kerns Hotel in sub-zero weather. The walls crumble, bodies are searched for in the river, and the crowd watches as firefighters spray water (6:59-7:55). 1938 King Zog Weds. A soldier lights the cigarette of King Zog of Albania. Mussolini’s son-in-law Galeazzo Ciano arrives by plane to attend the wedding. The new Queen stands in her wedding dress, her bridesmaids cascading down the steps. King Zog and the Queen watch as troops parade past (7:56-9:03). 1922 Aviation. The crowd looks up to see the first skywriting over New York, “Hello USA” (9:04-9:46). 1926 Fashions of the Day. A Chicago millinery show features models in cloche hats and knee-length skirts and dresses. Hats vary from a satin helmet worn by a model wearing metal braces when she smiles to a large wide-brim sunhat (9:47-10:30). 1930 Sports. Professional golfers Gene Sarazen and Tommy Armour compete at a tournament. Both wear knickers as golf pants. (10:31-11:13). 1927 Swimmers grease up for the 22-mile swim from Catalina Island to California for the Wrigley Ocean Marathon. Rescue boats follow the swimmers. 17-year old George Young “the Catalina Kid” wins as the only finisher, shown the next day in a hospital bed (11:14-12:05).
