60434 YESTERDAY’S NEWSREEL BABE RUTH 1933 CHICAGO WORLD’S FAIR

One of the episodes of “Yesterday’s Newsreels” — an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection, features seven segments of historic highlights. The first segment “America’s Idol” (:29) looks at baseball and Babe Ruth, at the plate in 1914 and two years later pitching for Boston (:38-1:01). In Chicago, he bats for War Bonds (1:06). Ruth is featured with his daughter on his farm in Sudbury, Massachusetts. He chops wood to keep in shape as an outfielder in 1920 for the New York Yankees (1:15-2:04). At Spring Training in St. Petersburg Florida, Babe warms up at the plate before shaking hands with Yankees’ manager Miller Huggins (2:15). A shot of Yankee Stadium (12:11) goes on to show Babe and Lou Gehrig bringing in the runs (2:28-2:48). Babe next golfs in 1926 with famed golfer Walter Hagen (2:54). In 1927, he stars in Babe Ruth Comes Home, getting makeup applied by co-star Anna Nielsen (3:07). In 1930, he plays billiards with middle-weight champion Mickey Walker for charity (3:35). Ever humble, Babe visits crippled children at Knickerbocker Hospital (4:11). The second segment “Chicago Plays Host to World” (5:13) highlights the 1933 World’s Fair. The airship USS Macon provides a bird’s eye view (5:18) of the Amos and Andy sky ride (5:36). A replica of Fort Dearborn is one of the attractions (5:53), as is the unusual Travel and Transport building (6:09). Millions walked down the Avenue of Flags (6:15).

The third segment features “Personalities” (6:22). It opens in 1922 with dancer Isadora Duncan and her Russian husband Sergei Yesenin (6:30). Henry Cantwell Wallace is sworn in as President Harding’s Secretary of Agriculture in 1921 (6:42). In 1926, Hollywood’s Hobart Bosworth, Marguerite De La Motte, and Dorothy McHale dine for charity (7:00). The fourth segment “Prisoners Riot!” (7:25) covers the August 25, 1934 prison riots at Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. State Troopers arrive to assist guards (7:53). The massive wreckage inside the prison is shown (8:08) as order is returned. The fifth segment “Aviation” (8:20) shows mid-air refueling (8:26) over St. Louis, Missouri in July 1929 as the record for an endurance flight is broken by the Curtiss-Robertson Robin cabin monoplane. The two pilots involved were Dale Jackson and Forest O Brine, to whom fuel and food was lowered 47 times (9:04) before breaking the record.

The sixth segment features “Fashions of the Day” (9:29). In 1925, contestants for Miss Philadelphia model showcase bathing suits (9:34) and a wavy bob hairstyle (9:43). Annette Jackson is the winner in a black knit bathing suit (9:55). The seven segment “Sports” (10:15) opens with highlights of the 1936 Winter Olympics in Bavaria, Germany (10:21). A downhill skier zips to the bottom (10:26). A woman swooshes past in the women’s slalom (10:36), followed by a skier in the men’s slalom (10:50). A great shot of the Olympic banner is shown as a ski jumper launches over it (10:59). We move to Forest Hills, Long Island, for the 1933 U.S. Open tennis match where England’s Fred Perry is victorious over Australia’s Jack Crawford (11:13-12:00).
