60234 1958 MILITARY TOUR OF SOUTHEAST ASIA VIETNAM, CAMBODIA, PHILIPPINES & THAILAND

This color film provides footage of the January 1958 military tour of Southeast Asia by General I.D. White for the Military Assistance Advisory program in the Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Calls were made at Navy forces in Marianas, Philippines, and Guam, and British commanders in Singapore and Hong Kong. The General and his staff leave Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii in a 1940s Cadillac. Shown are the Lockheed Constellation and its cockpit (:45-3:07). The Constellation arrives at Wake Island, refuels, and lands in Guam. The U.S. flag flies at the NAS Administration Building. The Commissioned Officers’ Mess is closed. The Constellation flies over the Philippine Islands and lands at Manila International Airport. A two-toned Chevy Bel Air approaches (3:08-5:11). A rowboat sits under palm trees. A vendor’s cart has a Pepsi logo (5:12-5:23). The camera pans Manilla Harbor. The party takes a tour on The R&R C-7304. Sangley Point Naval Air Station is shown. An Honor Guard performs (5:24-7:35). 1958 Philippine’s new houses contrasts against rundown ones. The military leaders look at plans on the hood of a car. The U.S. Embassy C-47 plane ( 0-48808) leaves (7:36-8:21). The C-47 lands at Camp John Hay in Bagulo. The outpost has multiple Cola-Cola signs. The Officers’ Mess building, mountain views, and the summer house of American Ambassador Bohlen are shown. A Golden Anniversary sign hangs at Clark Air Base. The Honor Guard performs. The Constellation (80613) leaves for Singapore, flying over Corregidor (8:22-11:16). Birds-eye views are shown of Singapore. The plane lands at Changi Royal Air Force Station. The General is greeted by a South Wales Honor Guard. Singapore streets are jammed with 1950s vehicles. A rickshaw passes. Carved life-sized figures are at Tiger Baumgarten park (11:17-14:40). The plane lands at Don Juan Airport Bangkok. The General is greeted by the Thai Honor Guard. Spire tops of buildings and Wat Phra Kaew Temple grounds are shown. Costumed dancers performed. The Standing Buddha is panned. Royal barges are shown. Floating markets pass. The General meets the King of Thailand and receives the Grand Cross (14:41-20:44). The C-47 lands at Siem Reap Cambodia. The Grand Hotel provides elephant rides. The group visits the Angkor Wat and Angkor Tom ruins. The First Armored Reconnaissance Regiment is visited. General Hartshorn’s headquarters and the Royal Palace are shown (20:45-30:00). The C-47 flies over the Mekong River and lands in South Vietnam. Oxen carts and rickshaws share the streets with cars. The President’s Palace is shown. General White receives the Vietnamese Army Emblem pin. Troops practice hand-to-rifle combat (30:01-33:26). The Constellation lands at Kai Tak Airport in Hong Kong. An Honor Guard greets the General. Double-decker busses pass. The Star Ferry passes different types of boats on the ride from Kowloon to Hong Kong. Victoria Peak is shown. The group takes a rickshaw and a cable car ride over Hong Kong. Aberdeen is crowded with fishing junks. Repulse Bay is crowded with sunbathers (33:27-41:30). General White visits Andersen Air Force Base Guam before returning to Hickam. Bird’s-eye views of Hawaii are shown (41:31-44:11).
