60124b WWII ERA LOS ANGELES RAILWAY TROLLEY EXCURSION LONDON & PORT STANLEY RAILWAY CANADA

This silent, amateur film begins with footage of a fan trip aboard a Los Angeles Railway trolley car (note the “Trolley Excursion” banner on the side at :15). The dates of this trip are unknown, but it’s possible that this trip was in late June of 1946, when the Railway Boosters rode the final car on the “A line”. The Los Angeles Railway (also known as Yellow Cars, LARy and later Los Angeles Transit Lines) was a system of streetcars that operated in Central Los Angeles and surrounding neighborhoods between 1901 and 1963. It operated on 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm) narrow gauge tracks. The company carried many more passengers than the Pacific Electric Railway’s Red Cars, which served a larger area of Los Angeles.

At 1:03, the film contains a shot of an LARy trolley car with a WWII War Bond banner. A Los Angeles Transit Lines trolley bus is visible at 1:15. At 1:37 another trolley car with a WWII sign on the side “Dig Deeper for Fighting Dollars — This is Your D-Day”. At 2:02 the trolley excursion continues.

Starting at 2:23, a London & Port Stanley Railway interurban motor car with a pantograph is shown. L&PS was one of the first railways to be built in Ontario in 1856. It provided connections between London, St. Thomas, Ontario and Port Stanley. It was built primarily to facilitate trade with the United States, particularly of wood and coal. The railroad also proved popular with local residents, particularly in the summer when many commuters utilized the system to travel to Port Stanley’s beach.

At 3:25, the Grand River Railway in Waterloo, Southwestern Ontario is shown. This line operated through 1955.

At 5:38, a Lake Erie & Southern Railway electric locomotive is shown.
