Opening titles: Yesterday’s Newsreel. Title: 1919-1934 – The Happy Warrior (:06-:45). Alfred Emanuel Smith, New York Governor, an American politician, he stands near a crowd. He has returned to New York City, he walks down the street. He shakes hands with the Ohio Governor, James Cox. Smith served four terms as Governor of NY. Smith plays golf. On a NJ beach, he rests. Smith visits the Boy Scouts. Election Day 1926, he wins his fourth term. In 1927, FDR offers Smith as the democratic nominee for President of the USA. Confetti flies as Smith has a parade as he’s running for President. Police follow him. Smith votes on election day but loses in a landslide to Herbert Hoover. Smith, his wife, cuts his birthday cake. In 1929, Cardinal Hayes gives Smith a Laetare Medal, high honor for layman of the Catholic Church. Smith plays with his grandchildren. Smith opens the door to the Empire State Building. Smith looks down onto the city (:46-4:42). Title: 1928 – Marvelous M-1. John C. Garand, was a Canadian-born designer of firearms who created the M-1 Garand, a semi-automatic rifle that was widely used by the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps during both World War II and the Korean War. Garand watches a military man fire the rifle. The man loads and fires it again. Title: 1920 – Personalities. Samuel Untermyer was a prominent American lawyer and civic leader. He looks at the camera. Aboard the USS Olympia, actress Gladys Cooper. She smiles. Hiram Warren Johnson was initially a leading American progressive and then a Liberal Isolationist Republican politician from California. He served as the 23rd Governor of California from 1911 to 1917. He stands aboard the famed steamship, Leviathan. He is currently in the senate (4:42-6:30). Title: 1927 – Washington Wind! November 17, 1927, 92 mph wind gusts have destroyed buildings in Washington, D.C. Windows are blown out, homes are toppled off their foundations. Store fronts are destroyed. Whole walls of apartments have been sheared off. A tin roof is wrapped in the telephone lines. An upside down garage. Destroyed Naval station, wrecked planes. Title: 1931 – The King and Kilts. Early 1930s, King George 5th and Queen Mary of England visit Braemar, Scotland. A Scottish dance. A caber toss. A man slips with his caber. A man tosses his caber far. King leaves (6:31-8:30). Title: 1923 – Aviation. Dayton, OH airport. Barling Bomber. General Billy Mitchell’s dream becomes reality as the XNBL-1 prepares to take off in August 1923. The plane readies to take off. Plane gets off the ground and stays in the air for 28 mins. Title: 1926 – Fashions of the Day. Fifth Avenue in NYC. Fur coats and minks. Daytime dresses all in the display. A nice dress. Black Hats (8:31-10:56). Title: 1928 – Sports. Belmont Park, Long Island. Mrs. Thomas Hitchcock visits. Joseph Widener, Prince Potenziani, the Governor of Rome, Italy. Horses walk to the post. The race begins. People are tense and watch. The winner is the horse, Osmond (10:57-12:17).
