Made in 1948 and directed by Jules Bucher, HORSEMEN OF THE PAMPAS shows Argentina in the immediate post-WWII period. The start of the film highlights Buenos Aires and includes images of the downtown with its parks and avenues, including at :58 the seat of government. At 1:07 a trolley car moves through the city, which is bustling with activity. At 1:33, a restaurant is shown serving the national dish — meat and more meat. At 2:30 the film switches its focus to the Pampa, the source of Argentina’s wealth. At 3:11, teams of horses are seen being used to plow fields. The grasslands are shown with cattle ranches, sheep and livestock. A typical estancia is seen at 3:40. Typical gaucho activities are seen and their lifestyle described. At 9:14, a barbed wire fence is repaired. At 15:00 a cattle drive is seen. At 19:00 a meat packing center at La Plata is seen, with cattle being herded to their death. At 19:27 meat is graded by inspectors. At 20:00 it is loaded onto ships for transport around the world. Wheat is also shown being loaded for shipment. No wonder Argentina in this era was the wealthiest nation in South America.
