59024 COMPUTER CONTROL OF WATER TREATMENT PLANT VIA GRAPHICAL INTERFACE

Interactive Graphics: A Man/Machine Partnership (possibly from 1979) is a short film that takes viewers on a tour of Central Contra Costa Sanitary District’s (CCCSD) new state-of-the-art water reclamation plant (00:25). The recently constructed advanced waste treatment plant (00:31) recycles domestic sewage for use as cooling and process water for the major industries in the San Francisco Bay area. It is one of the most advanced systems, constructed with state-of-the-art computer and instrumentation control systems featuring microcomputers (01:18). Two mainframe computers (01:27) are programmed to control plant equipment, such as pumps (01:30), valves, fans, motors, and circuit breakers. The Plant Operator has full control of the operations through the use of a high-tech touch-screen monitor computer (01:50). Graphics present crucial information to plant operators, using traditional trend recorders (02:11) as well as displaying plant schematics (02:27). The schematics tell operators whether systems are on or off, open or shut, or any other operating status necessary to safely run the plant. Data is recorded and turned into graphs for plant supervisors, so they can study long-term trends and plan for the future of the facility and each area of it, like the water-holding area (04:53). Future plans include being self-sufficient by producing its own energy from thermal byproducts, having a modern machine shop and maintenance shop, and having three well-equipped labs to monitor quality control. The film ends with several shots of the facility (05:51).

The Central Contra Costa Sanitary District (CCCSD), also called Central San, provides sanitary sewage transport and treatment for the central portion of Contra Costa County, California. The main facility is a 54-million-US-gallon (200,000 m3) per day treatment plant in residential Martinez, California and it provides service to approximately 462,000 residents. It operates and maintains 1,500 miles (2,400 km) of sewer lines out of its second location in Walnut Creek, California. It is a California Energy Commission Showcase Plant.
