58964 YESTERDAY’S NEWSREEL BARNSTORMERS CHARLES LINDBERGH 1920s AVIATION

One of a series of television programs made by Ziv Productions from the General Newsreel Library, this episode of Yesterday’s Newsreel begins with “Wings of Commerce” (1:31). In which we see planes like those which had seen service in World War I by the Lafayette Escadrille sold by the government as surplus as daredevils and barnstormers use them for stunts. Across the Atlantic, Europe’s most enterprising air men launch travel between London and Paris (1:45). In open cockpits, passengers are lifted across the channel as planes are first attempted for use as travel machines (1:53). Soon cockpits will be covered for comfort of passengers (2:16). Larger planes designed to carry more passengers cut costs per trip by 1921 (2:22) and later were able to carry baggage as well (2:36). On May 2nd, 1923; in San Diego a historical trans-continental flight begins (2:53). The greatest contribution to flight will be made by 25 year old Charles Lindbergh in May of 1927 (3:01) and the second is completed on June 7th (3:29). After flying for nearly 4,000 miles, Clarence Chamberlin with passenger Charles Levine reached Berlin (3:42). On the Great Lakes in 1929, a plane carrying fifty passengers takes off and begins trend of flying giants (4:04). In 1929, a plane equipped with 12 liquid cooled Curtiss engines and accommodating 100 passengers is in operation (4:14).The China Clipper will spread wings on March 17th, 1937, and will make regularly scheduled luxury flights to China (4:46).With jet propulsion becoming popular, Canadian airlines spread from Montreal to NY in one hour (5:12).

The next chapter is titled “1929 Mrs. Atlas?” and in Austria, a woman demonstrates to lay down on one’s stomach if someone is caught in the street (5:43). The first lie detector test is used on a convict to prove his not guilty plea (6:24). The Personalities section begins with a young Teddy Roosevelt (6:56). Grace La Rue, an actress and star of Broadway and London Stages (7:27) is pictured.

Thomas W Lamont, a popular financier and banker returns from his trip to Japan in 1926 (7:39). Disaster strikes as on April 3rd, 1929 a fireworks factory explodes killing 10 and injuring more in Pennsylvania (8:16). In 1924, there is a natural service station in Alberta, Canada in which oil is taken from ground directly to automobile (8:59). The Big Bell (9:35) shows the largest bell in Riverside Memorial Church, above the Hudson, beginning it’s journey up. The Fashion of the Day is flat stomachs and women are shown using machines to gain the look (11:02). In sports, July 14th, 1935 a motor boat race is taking place in Buffalo New York (11:35).
