Yesterday’s Newsreel was created by the Ziv TV network using newsreel footage from the General Newsreel Co. These films use vintage footage combined with modern narration. This particular episode opens with “The Soldier King” (:08). Albert I of Belgium appears in 1914 (:20). Germans invaded Belgium in August of that year as WW1 broke out. Tom Hale mentions Belgium’s stance of neutrality (:31). Kaiser Wilhelm’s army marches (:26). Colonel Henri-Philippe Petain (:42) arrives in Belgium to visit French troops. The edge of no-man’s land is pictured (:53). Wilhelm steps into the trenches (1:02). King Albert sits in the cockpit ready for takeoff to peer at the progress on the front (1:16). General Pershing appears as the US joined the allied cause (1:30). US flags wave in the hands of US troops (1:35). The Treaty of Versailles was signed in June of 1919 (1:42). Woodrow Wilson is pictured as Albert’s guest (1:53). King Albert visits the United States (1:56). New York city follows in the early 19th century (2:00); pedestrians jam the streets with officials on horseback. Manhattan’s Mayor John Francis Hyland (2:02) appears among the crowd. A tree planting ceremony in Central Park follows the City Hall reception (2:07). Queen Elizabeth attends (2:10). Crown Prince Leopold shovels dirt (2:13). King Albert receives a degree from Nicholas Murray Butler (2:24) from Columbia University. A parade honoring the Belgium King runs through the streets of Los Angeles (2:30). Leopold is pictured on the USS Truxton in Virginia waters (2:57). The camera pans over the expanse of the great vessel (3:05). Queen Elizabeth is pictured with an Italian Admiral (3:11). The SS George Washington brought the royal family home (3:16). They are pictured back in Belgium on April 27th of 1930 (3:22) for the celebration of Belgium’s 100th anniversary of independence. Battles are reenacted (3:53) as horse and carriage run through mud (4:03). King Albert enters his car (4:14). The King perished in February of 1934 (4:25). A funeral procession moves through the streets including King Albert’s horse (4:36). The procession reaches the Church of Our Lady Laeken (4:42). Pennsylvania law student (5:06), Ben Zosky hops; with hands and feet bound, into a lake in 1921. Ben tugs a boat filled with passengers while completely bound (5:23). Celebrities of the 1920’s begins with Roald Amundsen (5:48). Roald was a Norwegian explorer of the Polar Regions. He is pictured with two Eskimo girls of the Chukchi tribe (5:50) on January 9th of 1922. New York’s Mayor McKee (6:09) stands with Kate Smith in 1931. She sings (6:19) prior to a baseball game between the Yankees and the Giants. Stanley Baldwin (6:31); the English Chancellor of Exchequer follows in 1922. The following year, he begins his term as Britain’s Prime Minister (6:42). In May of 1930 fires erupt on New Jersey waters (7:05) from a small motor tanker eruption. Camera angles on the ground capture flames shooting up from gallons of crude oil (7:26). Bayonne’s Fire Department works to put out the flames (7:43). Chicago’s Union Station opened in July of 1925 (8:03). Chicago city and railroad dignitaries (8:13) appear including Samuel Reed (8:25) and Mayor Dever (8:27). The camera pans over the new transit station (8:42). Aviation highlights of 1922 feature Lilian Gatlin in a Curtis Jenny in October (9:16). Lilian was the first woman to fly across the entire nation (9:19). She zooms off for the air races in Detroit (9:28). Sally Anderson presents fashion of the early 1920’s (9:34). A woman’s strappy heels are zoomed in on (9:42). Two women try on snow boots (9:50), boudoir moccasins and the boulevard shoe (9:59). Sir Thomas Lipton appears in July 28th of 1920 (10:23) as he attempts to in sailings greatest prize; the America Cup. The sail boats are pictured at a ten mile marker in waters off Sandy Hook (10:30). America’s Resolute takes the win (10:59). Lipton smiles for the camera; an un-sore loser (11:03). An Army football game played in 1922 (11:08) at Fort Humphrey in Virginia. Wrestling matches follow (11:25). The soldiers play a game of tug of war on mule back (11:29). Army style stake driving concludes the film (11:37).
