This 1948 American Red Cross short film, “Danger is Your Companion,” produced by Ted Nemeth Studios, promotes the importance of being first aid ready in an age (late 1940s) of increasing accidents. The film begins with a scene of two men chatting on a street about the increasing number of accidents; stores for the F.W. Woolworth Company, Jay Ann, and Miles are featured in the background (00:45). While groups work to educate more and more people on accident safety and response, accidents continue to cause more deaths than all communicable diseases combined. The film stresses that being able to respond to an accident, such as a motorcycle crash (03:35), is key to saving lives and is a civic duty. Red Cross First Aid classes (06:36) are offered all over the country to help prepare men, women, and children. Accidents are increasingly happening at industrial work (08:30), farm life (10:05), children at play (10:42), and at the home (11:10), but nowhere more so than on the nation’s highways (11:45). Thus, the film concludes, it is very important for Americans to make sure they are prepared to respond to accidents by going through proper first aid education.
