The 1964 short film Aviation Mechanic, produced by MPO, promotes the profession of the aviation mechanic and the Academy of Aeronautics (now the Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology). The film covers the wide variety of careers available to an aviation mechanic, including servicing jets for commercial airlines, selling and maintaining private planes, advancing military aircraft, and working on rocket propulsion systems for NASA. Caring for a commercial airline’s fleet is just one job an aviation mechanic can have (00:35), whether that is examining an engine (01:43) or running landing gear retraction tests (02:24). Some aviation mechanics eventually enter the sales side of the business, selling small planes to private parties (04:07). The film shows old footage of planes from the 1920s and 1930s, stressing the ever-evolving world of aviation—including a shot of a Ford Trimotor being maintained at (5:15), people boarding an American Airways Curtiss T-32 Condor II at Chicago Municipal Airport (05:32). Some aviation mechanics contribute to the technological advancements made in aviation, such as the development of vertical takeoff and landing and hovering, as is the case with the US Army Lockheed XV-4 “Hummingbird,” originally the VZ-10 (08:37). Others help with the rocket propulsion systems at NASA (10:56). Students studying at the Academy of Aeronautics (09:22) get the diverse training, including practicing on test panels (10:21) they need to successfully find jobs in their field. The aviation mechanic has the skills and knowledge to ensure the safety and continued progress within the field of aviation.
