58494 “IMPERIAL PALACE SHRINE” 1920s HOME MOVIE TRIP TO KOBE, KYOTO & NARA JAPAN, HONOLULU, HAWAII

This silent black and white travelogue takes viewers on a tour to Japan. It shows the Imperial Palace and street scenes in Kobe, Kyoto and Nara. The second portion of the film travels to Hawaii with notable sites there. Pedestrians and birds flutter in front of the shrine (:20). The first shrine visited is in Kyoto Japan. It is the Chioin Temple (:36). This is the headquarters of the Jodo-shu founded by Honen. The intricate architecture is zoomed in on (:50). The Temple of Chimo (:53) appears. The Heian-jingu Shrine was built in 1895 (1:13). Japanese visitors mill outside the shrine (1:17) as security passes. Deer move before bleached out black and white footage (2:06). Security and deer again in front of the ancient shrine (2:33). Futawara Temple (2:45) appears with tourists in thick fur winter coats moving under. The film turns to Nikko as a woman crosses the street with a large sack atop her back (3:55). Three Japanese women appear in traditional attire (4:04). The Nikko Toshogu Shrine (4:38) dates back 1617. Another portion of the shrine (4:53). Monkeys are carved into the walls (5:12). The camera pans over the intricate architecture of the shrine (5:26) with little winged faces and lions detailed into it. The figure of Tokugawa Leyasu sits within the shrine (5:48) armed with arrows. Tiny gold lion structures sit nearby (6:05). Snow partially coats the roofs (6:22). One of the three sacred store houses appears at (6:27). The film goes to the streets of Yokohama (6:38) with modern automobiles and Japanese pedestrians in the foreground. The stone Nijubashi bridge was built in 1888 (6:57). The Meiji Shrine (7:11) is a Shinto shrine opened in 1920 and dedicated to the spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife. A Japanese family of three heads for the entrance (7:22). Japanese students walk along the side walk (7:42). Two white haired women step from modern homes (7:54). Dark footage shows the inside of one of these homes (8:10). Travelers move away from a large cruiser liner (8:24). Daytime footage shows the travelers moving on the ship deck (8:49). A view is captured from the ships looking into the waters (9:29). Small boats move away from the large vessel (9:39). The camera captures high cliffs along the shore (9:47) of Hawaii. A Hawaiian native shows of coconuts before the cameraman (10:07). Well-dressed vacationers (10:20) in straw hats and suits mill about the foreground. Tourists visit the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (also known as the Laie Temple) (10:27). Waves ram against a rocky shoreline (10:37). Iolani Palace appears at (10:49). What appears to be an oil rig in the waters follows (10:56). The camera pans over the harbor and coastline (11:02). Two smartly dressed women appear aboard a ship (11:25) with close fitting bucket hats. Two tourists appear; one with a Hawaiian lay and the other in a swimsuit (11:40). The city appears surrounded by mountains (11:55). The Aloha Tower in Honolulu, Hawaii (11:58) is a retired lighthouse and common landmark. A speed boat zooms by (12:10). A close shot follows of the Aloha Tower (12:19) showing sightseers at its top. The vacationers are pictured with the ship’s captain and wrapped in Hawaiian lays (12:33). The ship prepares to head out from port (12:43).
