57084 BIZARRE REPUBLIC STEEL SALESMAN TRAINING FILM “HEAVENLY DAYS”

This bizarre 1960s sales training film made by Wilding for Republic Steel attempts to teach salesmen how to market stainless steel products and grow their business. The plot, which revolves around a guardian angel sent from heaven to coach a struggling Republic salesman, is straight out of a Hollywood feature. As the salesman struggles with lack of sleep, problems with his marriage and even his TV set, etc. his guardian angel (a former #1 salesman) proffers important advice. The lessons derived in the film are classic: #1 the importance of prospecting, #2 checking in with leads, #3 keep eyes open for new applications, #4 keep list of prospects’ products, #5 schedule calls weekly with customers, $6 study prospects’ products and market and #6 be prepared to listen and be helpful. The film contains some interesting segments including one at a diner at 29 minutes, a Standard Gas Station at 35:30, and at the start of the film scenes in heaven where the baby salesman (7:00) is seen arriving in this world in a basket.

Republic Steel was once the third largest steel producer in the United States. It was founded as the Republic Iron and Steel Company in Youngstown, Ohio in 1899. After rising to prominence during the early 20th Century, Republic suffered heavy economic losses and was eventually bought out before re-emerging in the early 2000s as a subsidiary. The company currently manufactures Special Bar Quality (SBQ) steel bars and employs around 2,000 people. It is currently owned by Grupo Simec, based in Guadalajara, Mexico.
