56394 BENGAL TIGER & INDIAN LEOPARD INDIA BIG CAT HUNTING TRIP & HONG KONG VISIT

Created by Paul Salvino, a veteran Alaska truck driver who had a passion for big game hunting, this silent film (which would have originally been presented with Salvino’s narration) documents a trip to India to hunt Bengal tigers and other big cats. At this time the killing of these animals was officially sanctioned by the state and viewed as a form of tourism. The film starts in Hong Kong (1:26) as Salvino and his party made their way towards India. At 2:28 a local farmer’s market is shown. Around 7:31 minutes the film transitions to Calcutta, India. At 10:00 people wash at a pump in the street, and at 10:45 a man gets a haircut. At 13:40 a crocodile is shown sunning itself. At 14:00 a small croc or cayman is captured. At 16:18 rural scenes are shown in a village including weaving using fibrous plants. At 18;30 girls are shown dancing in what must be a traditional ceremony. At 21:20 the hunt has started, with a blind being prepared in the forest. At 23:00 the hunting party moves through the jungle in a jeep. At 24:00 an elephant is used for transportation. At 25:00, native game is shown in the preserve. At 28:00, an Indian Leopard is shown after being shot by the Salvino party. It is butchered at 29 minutes. At 29:28 a wild boar is shown after being killed. At 29:43 Salvino poses with his beloved rifle. At 31:00 the hunt for the Bengal tiger has been successful; at 31:04 the teeth of the deceased creature are examined. At 32:00 local villagers view the carcass and celebrate its demise.
