This 1969 episode of “The Eternal Light,” an NBC television series produced in conjunction with the Jewish Theological Seminary, represents part two of a series telling the “story of the renewal of European Jewry” following World War II and the Holocaust (TRT: 28:51).

The bombing of Europe by German Nazis during WWII (0:08). Opening titles: “The Eternal Light: The Remnant” (0:38). A placid Prague riverfront over narration invoking the horrors of the Holocaust (0:55). Holocaust survivor Pavel Coleman, President of the Jewish Community of Prague. Coleman speaks of the seizure of Czechoslovakia in 1938 and 1939 and the estimated death tolls from subsequent extermination camps (1:24). Terezín or the Theresienstadt Ghetto in the Czech Republic, now a memorial shrine. Barracks. Gallows (2:18). A sign: “Krematorium.” POV a cart entering a furnace at a concentration camp (3:13). Numbered records of the deceased. Burned remains (4:09). A red candle in the foreground, a list of 77,000 Czech victims in the background. A young man walks past a menorah in a synagogue. Zoom in on the name “Richtmann” (4:22). Abramim Tolentino, a survivor from Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia, tells his story (5:23). Candles in a shrine. Narration speaks of the expatriation of Yugoslavian Jews (6:07). Miriam Steiner, a survivor turned Director of the Yugoslav Federation of Jewish Youth, a children’s camp near Dubrovnik estimates the local death toll at 66,000 (6:22). Danish fishermen and riverfront docks in Denmark (6:58). Frode Jakobsen, a resistance leader turned member of Parliament, speaks on the issue of moral obligation (7:35). Off the Appian Way, the Ardeatine Caves, remnants of ancient Christian catacombs and the site of a Nazi massacre in March of 1944. Bodies of the deceased over sounds of gunfire representing execution by the order of Albert Kesselring of the Luftwaffe (10:15). Roman bodies being exhumed. Ten random Romans were murdered for each German killed or wounded by an Italian Resistance air raid (10:51). A monumental statue commemorating the martyrs. Graves of the Di Consiglio family (11:23). Brick apartment buildings in Venice. Rabbi Abraham Piatelli speaks on the loss of a generation (11:59). A ship of refugees. The flag of Israel. Marching soldiers. David Ben-Gurion (12:57). Rabbi Morton H. Narrowe of Stockholm (13:26). Rabbi Ariel Toaff of Italy (14:06). Baron Edmond de Rothschild of France speaks of a “sense of belonging” and Zionism (14:57). Baron Guy de Rothschild speaks of Charles DeGaulle, the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, and the Suez Crisis of 1956. “We were incensed, we were hurt, we were offended, and we became hostile” (16:08). Girls sing and hold hands in a circle outdoors. Miriam Steiner speaks (17:33). The narrator introduces the topic of Zionism in Communist countries. Jewish children sing. Rabbi Narrowe. Rabbi Bent Melchior (18:16). Edmond de Rothschild. Rabbi Toaff (20:20). Rabbi Piatelli (21:46). A Roman tomb defaced with a swastika illustrations a discussion of anti-semitism from Mauricio Piperno of the Italian Federation of Jewish Youth. Guy de Rothschild (22:12). Venice.
