56034 “ YESTERDAY’S NEWSREEL: THE CHACO WAR ” 1932-35 BOLIVIA & PARAGUAY CONFLICT

Yesterday’s Newsreel was an early TV program created by the Ziv Network, which utilized the General Newsreel holdings shot in 1901-36. The show was comprised of newsreel footage along with modern narration of topics such as fashion, sports stars, news from the war front and cartoonists. This particular feature begins with the Chaco War. This war was fought from 1932 to 1935 between Bolivia and Paraguay. It opens with the riverfront of Paraguay in 1928. The neighboring country of Bolivia sought control of the Parana River (:47). 1929 to 1931 saw armed clashes in the sea port (1:08). Paraguay declared war in 1933. The Paraguayan General Felix Estigarriba (1:20) leads troops to battle. Water is rationed out as it became an essential weapon (1:31). Bolivia divisions fight back with aircraft (1:38). The UN and US combined to settle the dispute. Hot air balloons sit on the beach in Venice, California in 1920 (2:19) ready to be guided by monkeys. The monkeys were representing four nations and were to compete. The American contestants (2:32) precede the British (2:35). Balloons take to the airs (2:41). The film turns to Framingham, Massachusetts in 1919 for WW1 trophies (3:14). German weapons arrive (3:18). The cannon and field pieces are pictured captured from the Kaiser’s defeated armies (3:25). They were to be shipped out for use as lawn decorations. A chicken pokes it’s nose from a cannon (3:54). In Guildford, England, Sir Philip Gibbs and son Anthony are pictured (4:11). Philip; the notable war author, bends an arrow to fire (4:16). His brother’s, Arthur and Cosmo were also great writers. Silent film star Norma Talmadge (4:40) attends a family reunion in Hollywood in 1921. She is greeted by Mayor Cryer (4:48). Her sisters Connie and Natalie appear at her side (4:53). Frank Bacon (5:03) of the play ‘Lightnin’ was one of the most prominent stage actors. Native Americans found themselves trapped in a New Mexico blizzard (5:27). It was one of the worst in US history. Navajo and Zuni tribe members were trapped as US men worked to free them (5:41). Most are pulled out frozen to death (5:55). One of the few survivors is pictured (6:18). Surviving livestock also made the trek down the snowbound highlands (6:32) for McKinley County Trading Post. Native Americans receive rations of food (6:46). King Carol of Romania rides out of exile (7:08). By June of 1930, popular demand brought the King out of exile (7:13). He steps from his carriage to take oath for office (7:30). In the world of aviation in 1931, the German Focke-Wulf (7:53) is presented. The inventor, Focke appears (7:58) as one of Germany’s leading plane builders. The ‘flying duck’ takes to the skies (8:14). 1920’s fashion was all hats and flowers (8:35). This footage is from a flower show in New York (8:40). A woman enjoys the scents of Easter lilies (8:52). Fifth avenues Easter Parade rolls down in 1920 (9:00). The city’s best dressed enjoy the show (9:05). John D. Rockefeller Jr. appears (9:18). Sports takes viewers to Franklin field in Philadelphia in1925 (9:31) for the national intercollegiate. The winner of the long toss (9:48) is pictured. Boys take off at the start of the mile run (9:53). A distance runner known as Haggerty takes the win (10:10). The 100 yard dash begins (10:13). A Syracuse student takes the win here (10:19). The hundred ten yard high hurdle race (10:25) sees a Southern California student taking the lead (10:31). In Saratoga on July 30th (10:37) it’s the opening day at the races. William Vanderbilt and Mrs. Earl Smith are among the spectators (10:44). Mr. and Mrs. Widener (10:54). Horse and jockey enter the track (11:04). The race begins (11:22). Princess Doreen maintains the lead (11:52). She beats Sarazen in an upset (12:08). Princess Doreen would go on to be the top American female money-winner.
