56024 YESTERDAY’S NEWSREEL FRENCH FOREIGN LEGION FLOYD GIBBONS SS NEW YORK RUNS AGROUND

This black and white film is one of the episodes of “Yesterday’s Newsreels”, an early 1950s TV show made from the General Newsreel collection. It features nine segments of historic highlights. The French Foreign Legion 1912 (:20-4:20). General Antoine Hure rides into the streets of Morocco with his battalions of French and Moroccan troops following, some on horseback and some foot soldiers. The group gathers in the desert with a large number of camels before being sent off. The advance guards ride through rocky terrain, followed by cattle that serve as food, and foot soldiers (:20-2:20). Local chieftains join on horseback, dressed in traditional clothing. The soldiers, horses, and camels camp has teepee-like tents and cannons (2:21-3:08). Locals pay for grain and protection (3:09-3:45). Troops move with the camels to a Kasbah outpost in the Atlas Mountains. Cannons are in place to fire against local tribes that are shown advancing on horseback (3:47-4:20). Foolproof Lifeboat 1939 (4:23-5:20). The inventor of the self-launching lifeboat tests it in New York, only to have it fail to stay upright. Personalities 1919 (5:22). War correspondent Floyd Gibbons is shown in uniform, wearing what become his signature eyepatch. (5:52) 1920, Mary Pickford’s brother Jack stands with his wife, actress Olive Thomas, before leaving for Paris, She would tragically die during that trip. (6:13) 1921, Italian conductor maestro Arturo Toscanini visits America. “New York” Runs Aground (6:36) 1928, the steamer New York is stuck in the sand bank at Cape Cod Canal. Stranded passengers leave in lifeboats. Roseland Rhythm (7:21) 1925, dancers compete in a Charleston contest at the Roseland Ballroom in New York. Cathedral Cornerstone 1925 (8:06). The cornerstone ceremony is shown for the Nave of the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York. Governor Alfred E. Smith attends. Early 1920s Aviation (8:58). An early airplane flaps long wings in an attempt to fly. Fashions of the Day 1910 (9:26). A woman steps into an early car wearing a long coat and hat with scarf. A woman in a long white dress with a bustle and carrying a parasol steps into a canoe. Another woman has tea while wearing a huge hat. Sports 1925 (10:44). President Coolidge hands Washington Senator’s Walter Johnson the MVP award. (11:11) 1928, 42 horses go to the post at the Grand National. They jump over obstacles, some horses and riders falling, until there are only two riders complete the course.
