55714 1945 OFFICIAL FILMS NEWS THRILLS YALTA CONFERENCE ALLIES CROSS RHINE RIVER INTO GERMANY

This 1945, black and white film “Official Films New Thrill” briefly recounts the meeting in the Crimea of Roosevelt, Stalin and Churchill at the Yalta Conference. The movie then quickly moves into the final battle scenes of WWII: the crushing defeat of Germany at the hands of Allied forces, resulting in the crossing of the Rhine and the push towards Berlin. The film was edited by Leslie Winik.

Yalta Conference, Feb 4, 1945 – Feb 11, 1945. The Livadia Palace. The palace was a summer retreat of the last Russian tsar, Nicholas II and his family in Livadiya, Crimea. The palace housed the apartments for Franklin Delano Roosevelt and other members of the American delegation. Joseph Stalin enters the room and sits at a table. Roosevelt is surrounded by his advisors and Churchill joins the meeting at 1:00. Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin sit in a garden surrounded by members of their respective delegations 1:23.

Battle of Germany 2:06. American bomber aircraft fly overhead 2:08. Ludwigslust. Ludwigslust is a central castle town of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, 40 km south of Schwerin. Aerial bombings attack the Nazi transportation network 2:25. Nuremberg. Nuremberg is the second-largest city of the German federal state of Bavaria after its capital Munich. Bombs are dropped from warplanes and explode below 2:35. Fighters attack Nazi planes on the ground 2:50. The Nazi planes are destroyed on the airfield 3:00. Lüneburg. Lüneburg also called Lunenburg in English, is a town in the German state of Lower Saxony 3:09. Bombs are dropped from warplanes and decimate the earth 3:27. Reichs-Grenze, the German border 3:35. Soldiers by foot, by Jeep and by tank in the field 3:52. German observation towers blasted 4:05. Tanks roll through the town 4:15. Prisoners are rounded up and marched through the towns 4:27. An RAF P-47 Thunderbolt plane lands in heavy snow and crashes into another 4:40. Tanks roll through and buildings burn 5:04. A smoke bomb conceals a street crossing 5:14. The last snipers forced out by the tanks 5:25. A lone, standing Cathedral stands in the distance in the center of Cologne 5:35. Cologne is the largest city of Germany’s most populous federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the fourth-most populous city in Germany. Explosions within the city center as tanks roll through 6:00. A German tank is blasted and the soldier’s flee for safety 6:15. The Cathedral in the center of Cologne is barely touched, harboring no damage in what seems like a miracle of allied marksmanship 6:38. The river Rhine, the last great barrier between the Western front and Berlin 6:47. The Ludendorff Railway Bridge 7:00. First patrols of the 9th Armored Division race across the bridge 7:12. A hostile army crosses the Rhine for the first time in more than a century 7:30. First Army forces cross the bridge and get set 7:38. 30 German planes are shot out of the sky in a counterattack by the allied forces 7:55. On the near side of the Rhine, equipment of the 21st Army group is ready 8:09; DUKWs, Alligators, Buffaloes and barges rush into position 8:21. DUKW boats enter the water 8:30. Invasion craft carry the first wave of commandos 8:41. Pontoon bridges are set up by engineers 8:57. Winston Churchill and Army commanders come by boat to put the final seal on victory 9:15. White flags hanging from the windows in town 9:30. An Official Film. The End.
