55044 EMERGENCY LANDING OF CAPITAL AIRLINES VISCOUNT AT LA GUARDIA AIRPORT

This fascinating, silent home movie shows the emergency landing of a Capital Airlines Viscount, tail #N7445. It’s unclear which airport that was shot at — the canister it came in said “Willow Run” — but on 25 May 1958 this same aircraft skidded off the runway at LaGuardia Airport in New York. Probably this is footage of that incident although as you can see, the real cause of the emergency was that the landing gear failed to go down into position. That same year Capital lost Flight 67 in a snowstorm at Freeland, Michigan. In this incident it appears everyone escaped the aircraft uninjured.

The aircraft was a V.745D series Viscount originally built for Capital that entered service in 1956; later in life it became a private plane and was owned by Ray Charles before being scrapped in 1993.

Capital Airlines was an airline serving the eastern, southern, southeastern, and midwestern United States. Capital’s headquarters were located at Washington National Airport (now Reagan Airport) across the Potomac river from Washington, D.C. where crew training and aircraft overhauls were also accomplished.[1] In the 1950s Capital was the fifth largest United States domestic carrier by passenger count (and sometimes by passenger-miles) after the Big Four air carriers (American, United, TWA, and Eastern).Capital merged with United Airlines in 1961.
