54934 YESTERDAY’S NEWSREEL 1933 HOLY YEAR POPE PIUS XI 1929 CHICAGO BLIZZARD

This “Yesterday’s Newsreel” film offers the viewer “television highlights of the news of yesteryear” by providing vintage clips of famous people and events from the first half of the 20th century. This episode begins with 1933’s Holy Year (mark 00:30) as Pope Pius XI celebrates the liturgical feast along with Roman Catholic faithful at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. The event is followed by scenes of a 1930s “Floating Cabaret” in the waters off Long Island, as bathing suit beauties dance with men in suits. “Return Bout” (mark 03:08) covers the 1939 “fight” between boxing champions Jack Dempsey and Jess Willard — actually a staged recreation of their famed 1919 bout. Personalities of 1920 (mark 03:56) include Assistant Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt, Republican politician Will H. Hays, and opera soprano Marion Talley, A crushing blizzard that hit Chicago in 1929 is revisited starting at mark 05:35 as residents dig out cars amidst white-out conditions, and plows go to work in the Chicago Loop. Mark 06:48 educates the view on how the army mined San Francisco Bay as part of a training exercise, followed by a look at new roads Yosemite National Park that opened in 1926, aviatrix Amelia Earhart shown in London in 1928 (mark 08:50), the 1926 fashion scene. Mark 10:20 introduces us to Indianapolis 500 winner Tommy Milton as well as marathon swimmers in Canada.
