5462z 1950s LUFTHANSA GERMAN AIRLINES   GERMANY VACATION TOUR  “CASTLES IN THE CLOUDS”   SKITCH HENDERSON 

This 1950s black and white film “Castles in the Clouds” is presented by Lufthansa German Airlines and is a tour through Germany versus castles themselves. The host is Skitch Henderson, a pianist, conductor, and composer and eventually, founder of The New York Pops orchestra at Carnegie Hall. Classical music by Beethoven, Bach, and Brahms is played throughout the film. A propeller spins on the Lufthansa Superstar Constellation. Skitch fastens his seatbelt and looks at a map. His seat fully reclines back for a nap. A view down the wing is shown (:18-1:34). In Berlin, a vendor hawks newspapers and magazines (1:35-1:44). A 1938 Volkswagen Beetle passes, followed by others (1:45-1:57). Hamburg is represented by a horse-drawn carriage and the ferry Tarpenbek (1:58-2:42). The Cologne Cathedral dates to 1248 (2:43-3:05). A shrine houses statues of the Crucifixion (3:06-3:29). Shown are the Cathedral statues, towering sanctuary, and stained-glass windows (3:30-4:35). Statues are carved out of wood in Oberammergau, also known for its Passion Play (4:36-5:12). Mozart was from Salszburg, where a music and drama festival is held annually (5:25-5:54). The region is known for exquisite porcelain figurines (5:55-6:10). Skitch receives a large tray of food from the stewardess (6:11-6:21). A statue of Mozart is in the square (6:22-6:30). Visitors tour Beethoven’s house in Bonn; shown are his scores, organ, and last piano (6:31-7:48). Pastoral scenes include oxen plowing, a woman hoeing, a horse-drawn farm wagon with a dachshund riding in it, and a rooster (7:49-9:00). There are views of mountains, lakes, and rushing streams. A child puts a tiny boat in the water, a couple rows by, as does a two-man kayak (9:01-9:58). A woman and child wave at a passing boat (10:24). A child picks flowers in a field and brings them to Skitch, who is in a Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing (W198) car (1954-1957), with its doors open (11:29-11:57). A collection of steins and Hummel figurines are for sale in Munich (12:05-12:33). A wall is plastered with opera and concert announcements (12:34-12:51). An orchestra plays in an amphitheater (12:52-13:30). A figure skater and children roller skate, bicycles and scooters pass, and a man bicycles with a cart of laundry behind (13:31-13:59). The playground has children playing (14:05-14:30). Different types of dogs are shown (14:31-14:45). A vendor hands a child a bratwurst (14:46-15:04), Skitch tries a Berliner donut (15:05-15:18). A girl holds a 1950s celluloid baby doll (15:19-15:25). Skitch talks to a young chimney sweep (15:31-15:43). The Margravial Opera House is in Bayreuth (16:00-16:13). Sets are built in the Festival Theatre; costumes, shoes, and props readied (16:14-17:09). Various Bavarian architecture and fountain statues are shown (17:10-18:36). An elderly woman hand sweeps and a basket of items is lifted to the attic (18:37-18:52) A giant cuckoo clock is shown (18:53-19:09). Skitch visits multiple unnamed German castles (19:28-20:39). The 300SL pulls up and the door rises and closes (20:40-21:56). Scenes flash by of Heidelberg, Neumunster, Lindau, the Black Forest, Baden-Baden, Hamburg, and Lorelei (21:57-24:07). An aerial tramway moves through the mountains (24:08-24:16).
