54474 1950s BEAUTY CONTEST & DIVING EXHIBITION AT BEVERLY WILSHIRE HOTEL ” CHAMP OR CHUMP “

This black and white film showcasing two Olympic divers and a beauty contest at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel was produced by Jerry Courneya and Jerry Frankel for Courneya Productions either after 1948 or after 1952, as Dr. Lee is mentioned as winning the Olympic 10-meter platform, which he did at both. The bathing suits also reflect late 1940s and early 1950s styles. The narrator is James Matthews and the sound produced by Cinesound. It opens scanning the crowd surrounding the Beverly Wilshire Hotel swimming pool (:22-:38). Marjorie Gestring, winner of the 1936 Olympic gold medal for the 3-meter springboard at only 13, executes a perfect dive (:44-1:03). Contestants in the poolside beauty contest parade for the judges (1:05-1:46). Dr. Samuel Lee executes multiple perfect dives (1:48-2:10). [Dr. Lee won a bronze medal in the 3-meter springboard and a gold medal in the 10-meter platform at the 1948 Olympics and a gold medal in the 10-meter platform at the 1952 Olympics.] More bathing suit-clad contestants strut by (2:12-3:06). A woman uses a 1940s home movie camera (3:29). Two adorable toddlers share a chair and food (3:34-3:44). More bathing suit-clad contestants are shown (3:46-4:04). A woman dressed as a Hula dancer performs on a surfboard (4:06-5:06). A contest between two relay teams begins with the backstroke and ends with the front crawl (5:08-6:10). The Hula dancer stands on her head on the surfboard and performs (5:12-6:36). Three simultaneous dives are shown in slow motion and at the actual speed (6:57-7:14). Dr. Lee dives again (7:15-7:37). More bathing suit-clad contestants and the winner is handed the trophy (7:42-8:52). Marjorie Gestring executes more dives (8:54-9:19). Dr. Lee performs what the film calls a commando dive in which the diver does a flip in the air, lands back on the board, and then dives forward. He also performs a forward 2 ½ and a back 1 ½ (9:23-10:10). Marjorie performs again (10:25-10:36), followed by Dr. Lee (10:37-10:40). A closeup of that home movie camera is at (10:47). A woman kicks a man into the pool who has been shown throughout the film as an obvious clown (10:48-11:01). A large woman who has been shown several times throughout the film going to the end of the board and not diving finally does so to end the film (11:05-11:10).

Marjorie Gestring (November 18, 1922 – April 20, 1992) was a competitive springboard diver from the United States. At the age of 13 years and 268 days, she won the gold medal in 3-meter springboard diving at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, making her, at the time, the youngest person ever to win an Olympic gold medal.
