54394 1980s U.S. AIR FORCE TERRORISM & TERROR ALERT FILM “The Real Threat”

Made during the Cold War and long before 9-11, this U.S. Air Force film was made to instruct American personnel based in Europe about the threat of terrorism. The film includes footage from various incidents in the 1970s and 80s, including the bombing of Harrod’s Department Store by the I.R.A. (1:00), an assault on the Queen’s horseguard and an Army band by the I.R.A. (1:30-3:00), attacks in Paris (4:00), the attack on the U.S. Army barracks in Lebanon (5:238) and the killing of the president of the American University in Beirut, and more. The film attempts to explain the motivation of the terrorists, and presents an underlying message that vigilance is important, since U.S. personnel in Europe may be the targets of some of these attacks.

At 3:30, Brian Michael Jenkins, an expert on terrorism, speaks on the subject. (During Jenkins’ nearly four decades of analysis, he has advised governments, private corporations, the Catholic Church, and the Church of England on terrorist threats.)

At 5:50, a Georgetown professor named Michael Craig Hudson speaks about Islamic Jihad and its leader Hussein Masawi. (Hudson is currently the Director of the Middle East Institute and Professor of Political Science at the National University of Singapore. He is also Professor Emeritus at Georgetown University, where he was Professor of International Relations since 1979 and Saif Ghobash Professor of Arab Studies since 1980 in the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service.)

At 6:45, Jonah Alexander speaks about state sponsored terrorism in particular the efforts of Iran.

At 8:00, a hijacked Kuwait Airlines airplane is seen and the narrator talks about the Shiite hijackers. Any American serviceman who had been on a plane that was hijacked would obviously be at risk, is the message.

At 9:55, a bombing at the Munich beer gardens is seen, the result of neo-Nazi terrorism. Karl Heinz Hoffman, a neo-Nazi, speaks about his beliefs.

At 10:48, FBI Director William Webster speaks about the agency’s investigation of terrorists and its role in preventing domestic terrorism. At 11:11, the American base at Ramstein is seen after a terrorist attack. The U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) headquarters became the target of a terrorist attack on August 31, 1981, at 7:21 a.m. carried out by a Red Army Faction commando called ‘Sigurd Debus’. A total of 20 victims were injured, some of them seriously.

At 12:26, Oliver Revell, Assistant FBI director, speaks about the uptick in terrorist attacks overseas and says that it’s inevitable there will be a domestic attack. At 12:50, the aftermath of an attack on the U.S. Congress is seen by the Armed Resistance Unit. Senator Howard Baker speaks about the attack. The 1983 U.S. Senate bombing was a bomb explosion at the United States Senate on November 7, 1983. Six members of the left-wing extremist “Resistance Conspiracy” were arrested in May 1988 and charged with the bombing, as well as related bombings of Fort McNair and the Washington Navy Yard.

At 15;20, a U.S. anti-terrorist team is seen training.

The film concludes with a warning that U.S. servicemen are top targets for overseas terrorists.
