54224 SOVIET NAVY SUBMARINE COLD WAR EXERCISE PROPAGANDA FILM

Made during the Cold War, this Soviet film about the submarine service appears aimed at children and includes cartoon footage of tall ships and dolphins at the start. The real heart of this film begins at about 2:20, as children observe a massive Soviet Navy drill that includes rocket-firing patrol boats, frogmen, and marching marines. At 2:50, the Soviet naval school is seen. (This may be the N.G. Kuznetsov Naval Academy located in Saint Petersburg, the only academy of the Russian Navy. It is a postgraduate institution somewhat comparable to the U.S. Naval War College and should not be confused with officer commissioning schools such as the U.S. Naval Academy.)

At 3:30, Soviet naval recruits are seen being trained and performing various classroom tasks including at 3:40 operating a submarine periscope in a simulator. At 3:55, a submarine hull simulator is seen in use. At 4:22, the Soviet submarine 218 is seen, probably a diesel powered boat. At 4:33 the crew is seen preparing to dive and sealing the hatch. The boat submerges at 4:50 and at 5:00 its commander uses the periscope to survey the area.

Life aboard the submarine is seen including the crew at work, cooking meals, sleeping in bunks, and conducting operations.

At 6:23 a combat drill is seen with the Soviet surface fleet, with torpedoes prepared. Anti-submarine warfare aircraft are seen operating in the vicinity including helicopters and at 7:02, anti-submarine depth charges are fired. At 7:24, the submarine is taking on water from the depth charging. After damage control, the 218 makes its way back to port.

The film ends showing cadets taking more classes and eventually graduating to join the submarine fleet.
