Three Guys Called Mac, “Navy”, “Reel 1”, “United States Marine Corps Presents”

This 1959 black and white Marine Corps recruiting film MH8663 “Three Guys Called Mac” was produced by Jam Handy. It follows three soldiers nicknamed Mac. It opens with the Forrestal-class supercarrier USS Ranger CV-61 (:25-:46). The first Mac, PFC McNulty, is a member of the Marine detachment (:47-1:48). The second Mac is PVC McKlusky, is a member of a Marine scouting and reconnaissance company and a scout swimmer (1:49-2:48). The third Mac is Staff Sergeant MacHeimer, in charge of the maintenance crew of a Marine jet fighter squadron (2:49-4:00). The film tracks each individual’s choice to become a Marine. McNulty talks to a recruiting officer in a room with posters, requesting ship duty (4:45-5:35). His performance in boot camp is shown in marching drills, going over a wall, and pugil stick fighting (5:36-7:00). Rifle training uses an M1 Garand (7:01-7:25). McNulty is assigned to Sea School. Quick shots are shown of various ports. A group of Marines in Blue Dress uniforms heads to shore (7:26-9:24). The Marines serve as guards, defend the ship from air attacks, and act as an Honor Guard (9:25-9:55). An ocean-level view of the Ranger is shown (10:17-10:38). In Washington, D.C., McClusky watches the color ceremonies at the Marine Corps Memorial (10:36-11:51). He walks with a pretty girl while wearing his Blue Dress Uniform (11:52-12:03). McClusky is shown in the woods wearing a camo uniform and seated by an equally camouflaged tent, putting together a rubber boat, and using binoculars while camouflaged in a field (12:04-13:38). At night, he patrols, using a compass (13:39-14:07). For fun, he is shown dancing, bowling, boxing, golfing, and diving (14:08-15:05). Staff Sergeant MacHeimer, dressed in a Service Uniform, greets his wife and children in their home for non-commissioned officers (15:06-16:04). He studies a jet engine manual (16:05-6:12). A Classification Section Testing Room is shown (16:14-16:23). He attends technical school (16:24-16:44). He performs maintenance on what may be a Skyhawk (16:45-17:11). Marines in Blue Dress Uniforms approach and march past (17:12-17:25). Waves crash against the carrier’s bow (17:26-17:32). Marine jobs are represented by greeting embassy dignitaries, a radar antenna, a bulldozer, a demolition explosion, and operating heavy equipment and amphibious vehicles (17:34-18:13). Marines serve mess hall food (18:14-18:25). They can be weather experts, photographers, and reporters (18:26-18:35). A Marine exercise comes over the teletype. Telephones and switchboards are shown as the Marines spring into action. Vehicles pass and various planes take off (18:36-20:35). A signal light is flashed (20:36). Men and supplies are loaded on the carrier (20:38-21:05). The Marines attach a missile, the carrier’s guns fire, planes take off, and transport helicopters loaded. The Landing Signal Officer gives instructions (21:06-22:45). Marines leave the helicopter (ET-48) and many more land as the men spread out (22:46-23:20). The exercise is shown with men scrambling and mock battle scenes (23:21-24:46). Seen are an amphibious vehicle (23:20), bazooka (23:46), machine gun (23:50), and flame thrower (24:44). The cease fire sounds on land and ship (24:48-25:38). The Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima) statue is shown (25:59).
