53544 UNITED WAY 1950s PROMOTIONAL FILM “THERE ARE NO STRANGERS”

Made for the United Way in the late 1940s or early 1950s and featuring newsman John Daly, this promotional film for the United Way focuses on the New York and New Jersey vicinity and its needs. The film uses the activities of registered nurse Virginia Bishop to show the good work of the United Way, starting at 1:55, where she is seen at the Visiting Nurses headquarters.

First, the nurse visits a family with a sick father and many children. At 3:20 the “Red Feather Service” of the Community Chest is seen, where clothing and other assistance is given to needy families. An infant is shown at 3:30. At 4:00 Daly speaks about charity hospitals and the need to spend community money to support the poor (remarks that resonate with today’s healthcare battles) through United Appeals. At 5:00 senior citizens are shown being cared for. At 5:50, a woman is given crutches by the nurses association. At 7:30, a social worker advises the family to have their daughter join the Girl Scouts and their sons to join the Boys Club of Newark and its baseball team. At 8:12, juvenile delinquents are shown. At 8:20 the nurse visits an African American heart patient at St. Michael’s Hospital where cardiorevascularization is shown (very bloody too!) At 9:50 a man is shown in recovery after surgery. At 10:00, the work of the USO is shown as supported by United Way.

At 10:00, outpatient work is shown with a girl who suffers from polio. Poliomyelitis and cerebral palsy affected children are shown at 10:50. Braces are shown as well as other treatments for these children, all supported by the United Way.

The film ends showing how even Virginia Bishop tithes money to the United Way to support their great efforts and includes a personal pitch by John Daly.

John Charles Patrick Croghan Daly (February 20, 1914 – February 24, 1991), generally known as John Charles Daly or simply John Daly, was an American journalist, game show host, and CBS News radio personality, best known for hosting the television panel show What’s My Line?.
