53464 YESTERDAY’S NEWSREEL TIBET & DALAI LAMA IN 1923 NEVADA GOLD RUSH

Episode 34 of the “Yesterday’s Newsreel” film series offers the viewer “television highlights of the news of yesteryear” by providing vintage clips of famous people and events from the first half of the 20th century. This episode opens with a look at the “Forbidden City of Tibet” from 1923 (mark 00:30) and the first images ever captured from that land, including Thubten Gyatso — the 13th Dalai Lama of Tibet — at mark 03:50. “Gold” takes viewers to the 1920s gold rush in Gilbert, Nevada starting at mark 04:06, followed at mark 05:38 by a look at a 1934 tale of a trainer of such caged beasts as lions and tigers. Personalities of 1938 (mark 06:25) include Douglas “Wrong Way” Corrigan (who famously made a nonstop flight from New York to Ireland as part of a “navigational error”) and dancer Evelyn Law. “The King Is Dead Long Live The King” (mark 07:37) recounts the 1934 death of Albert of Belgium and coronation of Leopold III, while the 1930 unveiling of President George Washington’s “head” at Mount Rushmore is shown starting at mark 09:20, as we also see sculptor Gutzon Borglum and look at a rendition of what the monument originally was to look like (mark 10:10). “Fashions of the Day” for 1920 are revealed starting at mark 10:15, followed by a 1936 sports highlight (mark 11:00) of Rudolf Caracciola’s victory at the Monaco Grand Prix.

“Yesterday’s Newsreel” was a short-lived, early TV show syndicated by ZIV-TV in 1948. The show features footage from the defunct General Film company library.
