53184 WWII ” LOOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS ” ANTI-ESPIONAGE PROPAGANDA FILM “SUCKER BAIT” PART 1

This black and white military propaganda film is one of two parts; this is Part One. It was shown to theatre audiences as part of the “loose lip sink ships” WWII warnings. It opens with a spinning globe ending on Berlin (:10-:26). A reenactment shows a room of well-dressed Germans at a Nazi school for spies. The warning to the theatre audience is not to help them by leaving documents out and freely talking about the details of the war. The class on ‘American Stupidity’ is taught by a German ranking officer standing under a portrait of Hitler. The spies are told to get soldiers to freely talk in conversations and he gives the following story (:28-3:35). The wheels of a steam locomotive pass by (3:37). Onboard, a soldier looks through a magazine with pin-up photos. Another one begins to talk about upcoming sea sickness and is silenced by a soldier and a poster on the wall (3:42-4:20). A German spy was listening through the bathroom grate (4:21-5:02). A soldier calls his dad and talks in a prearranged code; however, he sets up a lunch meeting for the day before the date he openly gives of when he leaves and the distance to get there. A German spy in line behind him then calls the operator back to get information on the call. The instructor continues the story (5:03-7:08). Churches in port towns are good places to pick up information. The soldier who talked on the phone has been followed there. The spy, an old man, rides on the bus with the soldier on his way to the Harbor House. The soldier freely talks to him about the number of men at the base and other details. An officer behind him interrupts to deal with him (7:09-9:25). A poster on the wall advices war workers to see their doctors regularly. The doctor’s office is a spy headquarters as they try to get information on the troops leaving the U.S. The “officer” was actually a spy in a US uniform. He brags he’d told the soldier he’d have him court-martialed if he didn’t tell him everything he knew (9:27-10:49). At Harbor House, three soldiers share a room. One plays a harmonica, one smokes, and the third accidently rips a 1940s 8 cent Transport Plane Air Mail stamp from a letter he’s written to mail outside of military screening. A pack of Home Run cigarettes is on the desk. He goes downstairs to buy a new stamp (10:50-12:50). At the desk, a man steals the letter (12:51-14:05). He follows the soldier to a club where a woman in a band dances with shakers. The soldier drinks three shots. An attractive blonde enters, has an argument with a guy at a table who leaves, and the soldier steps over to her. (14:06-17:22. End of Part One.
