52704a 1940s HOLLYWOOD CALIFORNIA ANGEL’S FLIGHT HOLLYWOOD BOWL

This short, silent, b&w film from Harold F. Jenkins’ short-lived “World in Color” company, shows views of Hollywood in the late 1940s. It was shot by Jack Leppert, an actor whose career hit a road block before WWII. The film was sold at tourist shops on Hollywood Blvd. for a couple of bucks.

Betty Grable, Bob Hope and Eddie Cantor’s names are seen in the concrete out front. At 1:37 the sunrise service at the Hollywood Bowl, an Easter tradition, is seen. At 2:00 the Warner Bros. studio is seen and at 2:12 NBC Studios. At 2:30 KNX radio and CBS are shown, and at 2:35 the Brown Derby Restaurant. At 2:43 Aimee Semple McPherson’s mega church is shown. At 2:50 the Angel’s Flight funicular railway is shown on Bunker Hill in downtown. The film ends with brief shots of downtown Hollywood at night with its glowing neon signs.
