52644 PAT SALVINO’S POLAR ADVENTURE 1960s POLAR BEAR BIG GAME HUNT in ALASKA KOTZEBUE TAXIDERMY (Print 1)

Made by filmmaker, sporting goods store and truck company owner Pat Salvino, this film POLAR ADVENTURE shows a big game hunt of a different sort — a hunt for a polar bear. It likely dates to about 1964. The film follows Salvino from Seattle to Alaska, where he shoots a bear and has its pelt as a trophy. At 3:46 Salvino flies north to Kotzebue, Alaska by the Arctic Ocean. At 4:52 the Alaskan Airlines DC-6 carrying Salvino arrives at the airport. It is February and the temperature is well below zero. At 5:49 are shots of the Arctic Inn and post office in Kotzebue. At 6:13, local guide Nelson Walker (?). At 6:25, an Eskimo child plays with a hula hoop. At 6:30, Salvino examines sled dogs for his team. At 7:02 Pat and his Eskimo guide fish on a frozen lake, using an ice ax. At 7:40 they catch an arctic Sheefish. At 9:00 are shots of native craftspeople at work in Kotzebue, including making a sealskin jacket. At 9:30 ceremonial masks are carved from a whale jawbone. At 10:10, walrus ivory is shown being carved. At 10:30, Pat and his guides, John Swiss and Nelson Walker, discuss where to go hunting, 300 miles to the west towards Russia. At 11:26 the team preps (loading warm oil into the engine) and then boards a small Piper Super Cub airplane tail # N345JS and they fly towards the ice pack. At 12:50, a polar bear is spotted. At 14:33 a group of three males is spotted so the group lands on the ice pack. At 15:30 the group looks for bear tracks and begins tracking their prey. At 16:28, Pat shoots a bear at fairly close range. At 16:50, Pat approaches the bear to verify the kill. At 17:10 the hunter is congratulated for his aim. The group works quickly to skin the bear and get off the ice, since it’s very dangerous to be trapped on the ice in darkness. At 17:53, in 30-degree below zero weather, the airplane engine is successfully restarted. At 19:00 the hunting party returns to base and at 19:08 an Eskimo woman begins working on the hide, removing the fat and then cleaning it, and then putting it in a salt water bath in the ice. At 19:36 a native group performs a ritual song to celebrate the hunt. At 20:30 Pat returns to his home in Seattle with his prize. At 21:21, the bear hide is taken to the Jonas Bros. furrier and taxidermist where it is tanned and then put in a drum to be worked until it is soft and luxurious. At 22:02, a set of artificial teeth is prepared out of fiberglass and the bear’s face is prepared by the taxidermist. The end product is lined with gaberdine and delivered to Pat at 22:58.
