52604 HONOLULU HAWAII 1940s TRAVELOGUE FILM SURFING WAIKIKI BEACH & DIAMOND HEAD

This 1940s educational color film about Hawaii was produced by Little Features and the Calvin Company. It opens arriving at the pier in Honolulu, where lei vendors sell their colorful wares. The Royal Hawaiian Hotel is shown (:38-:58). At Waikiki Beach, two men carry an outrigger canoe to the water. They race multiple surfboard riders, shown up close balancing on their boards (:59-2:29). Diamond Head looms large over the city (2:30-2:42). A woman hand-sews leis(2:43). Sugarcane is grown on Maui, shown being cut and transported down a water channel (3:00-3:25). The Iao Valley and Iao Needle are shown (3:26-3:49). The leaves of the mimosa pudica fold inward when touched (3:50-4:00). The wood of monkeypod trees is used for carved bowls (4:02). Fields of pineapple are shown, as it how to plant pineapples, their growth process, and picking for sending for processing (4:08-6:30). Polynesian huts made of palm leaves are found along the Kona Coast, and shown is a father and son (6:31-7:05). A man repairs his fishing net using a shuttle. Another stands and casts his throw net into the ocean. He displays the tropical fish on tea leaves for the camera. Fishing with a snorkel and tipped spear is shown (7:06-9:15). A man weaves lauhala hats and mats. Two women weave Panama hats (9:16-9:46). Two men eat poi with their fingers (9:47-9:54). A band plays ukuleles while women in grass skirts do the Hula (9:55-10:19). The Matson Line SS Lurline is full of passengers waving goodbye to Hawaii (10:20-10:40).
