52354 P&O ORIENT LINES 1965 TRAVEL AGENT BRIEFING FILM “SHOWCASE ’65” CRUISE SHIPS

Showcase ’65 is a short marketing film from P&O Orient Lines made for travel agencies to update them on what is in the 1965 sales kit in an effort to continue growing the sea travel business. The film opens with shots of a cruise ship at sea and people walking through a city. A man walks into a travel agency and looks at brochures for sea-travel vacation voyages (01:26). The film then shows the handbook for P & O’s 1965 cruises. George Turner, vice president for marketing, speaks to the camera from his office about the growing demand for sea travel (02:15). He shows a map with several routes for around-the-world cruises, as well as other Pacific and Atlantic routes. The man who visited the travel agency now looks at a sea-travel magazine from the sales kit while sitting at his desk in his study (07:12). The film shows several different marketing displays for P & O that travel agents can put in store windows, and then the film goes through the different brochures (or “folders”) found in the marketing kit (08:15). These include the “Europe, Around the World, and Caribbean” vacation voyage folder, the P & O sailing schedule booklet, the passenger fares folder (11:24), a pictorial booklet on the cruise ships—featuring the Oriana, Orsova, and Oronsay, a brochure written by travel columnist Stanton Delaplane (13:35), a sailing schedule in Japanese and one in Chinese, and a copy of The Log, a publication for travel agencies (15:41). The film then shows a travel catalog for package tours. The film wraps up by showing the full 1965 sales kit on display, then going back to the customer as he packs his suitcase and walks out onto a balcony overlooking a harbor with a P & O cruise ship anchored in it.

P&O Cruises is a British cruise line based at Carnival House in Southampton, England, operated by Carnival UK and owned by Carnival Corporation & plc. Originally a constituent of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, P&O Cruises can claim to be the oldest cruise line in the world, its predecessor company having operated pleasure trips since 1844 and the world’s first dedicated cruise ship in 1881. It is the sister company of, and retains strong links with, P&O Cruises Australia. P&O Cruises was de-merged from the P&O group in 2000, becoming a subsidiary of P&O Princess Cruises plc, which subsequently merged with Carnival Corporation in 2003, to form Carnival Corporation & plc. P&O Cruises currently operates seven cruise ships and has a 2.4% market share of all cruise lines worldwide. Its most recent vessel, flagship Britannia, joined the fleet in March 2015.
