51644 “THREE FOR TOMORROW” 1950s OIL BUSINESS CAREERS PROMOTIONAL FILM

This 1958 educational color film about the oil business is presented by the American Petroleum Institute. It is a Parthenon Picture Hollywood written and directed by Charles Palmer. The actors portraying the family/work dilemma are Dean Harens, John Bryant, Jeanne Baird, Robert B. Williams, Warren Frost, Martin Braddock, and Stafford Repp. The mailbox sticker says “Mr. and Mrs. Mac Mackendall” in a street full of similar homes. “Marty” gathers clothes from her 1950s bedroom, which includes a TV on a metal stand, combination lamp and side table, and crib. Her husband shaves in the bathroom, wearing a sleeveless t-shirt. Marty drinks from a coffee cup as the washer vibrates, knocking Mac’s book and coffee over. Their young daughter cries and gets a hug from mom. Mac puts on his white dress shirt and suit coat. He kisses his wife and leaves (:42-3:27). The Jeep arrives at the Hansen Oil Co. Citadel Products office. Mac talks to Mr. Hansen (3:33-4:53). Mac meets with Mr. Baldwin of Citadel Oil Co. about the oil business (5:20-9:00). Marty’s shirt collar is turned up 1950s style and tucked into high-waisted pants (10:00). Mac and Mr. Baldwin remove their suit jackets and get in a 1958 Chevrolet Impala (10:11-10:42). A seismic exploration crew rides in boats through the Everglades. One uses a transit. Men wade through the swamp, digging small holes and planting dynamite charges. They run cable from the observation boat to microphones that pick up shockwaves. The data is transmitted and converted to maps (11:05-12:30). What may be a S-55 helicopter with pontoons rises and lands on an oil rig’s helipad. Two oil rigs stand side-by-side. A drill is lowered. Three men in construction hats review information (12:45-14:00). An independent drilling rig belongs to the Jasper Oil Co. Mrs. Jasper sits in a Ford pickup doing the books. Shown is drilling in action, including a worn drill bit. They drive off (15:12-16:36). The Impala drives to a field full of oil rigs. The pumps are barely moving. They arrive at a “Thermal Recovery” building. Inside are dials for each well. Crude oil is recovered using underground burning and pumped to storage tanks (16:46-18:20). A pipeline inspection plane flies over the pipeline (18:24-18:50). An oil refinery is shown (18:51-19:20). A car catalog is flipped through. The research lab has men in lab coats working at various machines (19:25-20:09). The Impala drives into a Citadel service station. The attendant, wearing a hat and bow tie, talks in the car window. He shows the oil stick to the driver (20:20-21:40). A 1958 American Airlines stewardess checks on the seated passengers (23:02). Marty is seen through the blinds ironing. At the door, Mac picks her up and twirls her around. She hands him an envelope. Mac goes outside to a phone booth to receive a long-distance phone call. Marty, in her bathrobe with pin-curl clips in her hair listens in, their heads together with the phone in between. He hangs up the phone, smiling. The couple hugs (25:56-28:45).
