51214 QUEEN ELIZABETH II 1954 ROYAL TOUR OF AUSTRALIA, SRI LANKA, UGANDA, GIBRALTAR, MALTA, LIBYA

This color, silent film was sold for the home market in the 1950s. It shows Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh’s royal tour of nations in the Commonwealth conducted in 1954, including Australia, Sri Lanka, Uganda, Malta and Libya as well as the English possession Gibraltar. The trip started in April in Australia, and concluded in May in Gibraltar.

Opening titles: Associated British-Pathe Ltd present Welcome the Queen! (:11). Title: Sydney, Australia. Boats in the harbor, people wave (:18). A large crowd watches as Queen Elizabeth walks by (:47). Police hold a crowd back (1:21). Car with the Queen inside slowly goes down a street (1:25). Lifeguards parade on the beach with the flags of Australia and New South Wales (1:48). Queen Elizabeth watches (2:05). Men put boats into the rough surf and try and maneuver (2:21). Title: Ceylon (aka Sri Lanka) (2:36). A celebratory dance by the people of Ceylon as the Queen is driven in a car (2:38). A man plays an instrument and people dance (2:59). A native, tribal dance is performed for the queen (3:11). Men ride elephants (3:34). The Queen scoops dirt out and places it on the ground with a shovel as men watch (3:48). People watch and smile (4:05). The Queen waves and walks (4:09). Queen inside a car drives slowly (4:21). Title: Uganda (4:33). Elephants (4:38). Hippos in the water (4:46). A man shakes the Queen’s hand and bows, other men follow suit (4:56). A native dance is performed for the Queen (5:08). Title: Tobruk, Libya (5:33). Barbed wire on a wall (5:37). Tobruk War Cemetery, tombstones inside the cemetery (5:55). Queen brings a wreath at the tombstone of a fallen British soldier (6:15). Royal Air Force planes in the sky (6:36). Her Majesty’s Royal Yacht Britannia at sea (6:44). Malta. A war memorial is unveiled in an official, solemn ceremony. British flags drop and a plaque can be seen (7:34). A little boy emerges from a boat and shakes hands with a soldier and then the Queen (8:01). People watch the Queen (8:20). A car pulls up and children get out of the car (8:41). A military parade for the Queen (9:21). Queen watches from a high vantage point in a building (9:30). Title: Gibraltar (9:47). Rock of Gibraltar (9:50). Ocean liner comes into port (10:01). British sailors stand near the Queen’s children (10:24). Queen is saluted by a soldier (10:45). Queen in a car goes by a huge crowd (10:51). Gibraltar macaques, tailless monkeys called a Barbary Macaque eat and wander (11:11). A child is led up the stairs by a soldier and then she feeds one of the monkeys, the other child enters and feeds a monkey as well followed by the Queen (11:21). People applaud the Queen, wave as she goes by in a car (12:49). Ocean liner in the harbor (13:16). End credits (13:29).
